BUILDING A GOOD LOOKING WEAPON
« on: November 22, 2005, 09:18:59 PM »
This little squib about BBQ guns has been running amuck in my mind.
I have three weapons, soon to be a fourth, which I would like to dress up to some degree to be, well, at least "wantabe" BBQ guns.
Help me out here.
1) Sig Stainless 220. I hate the Hogue grips as they are functional but tasteless. Nill grips and Hogue have some that are good looking wood grips. They range from blond wood to dark. I think the blond are classier looking than the dark, on stainless.
2) Sig 239, black (I think stainless with a black coating). Again the nill and hogue. but what about hard chrome?
3) STI trojan-blued. This weapon is, too me, butt ugly due to the front cocking serrations. they are functional, if front cocking serrations are functional, but what can I do about these or improve the looks to them? I have put some aluma-grips on it but they do not do all I would want. I am thinking some other grips-I like contrasting colors between the body and the grips but do not care for brown very much.
Now I would admit that I am not a great big fan of a lot of scroll work or tooling but I have seen examples of tooling that was more sedate and modern. Give me the names of some folks you know who do good quality work. I may give them one of these guns to see how I like it.

Will, there are still many custom grip makers, 'bout time you started considering Stag or Ivory.  I've suffered a death in my computer (hard drive) so I don't have the web addresses any more and can't show you the Birdseye Maple  grips I made for one of my Rugers.  They even make that tank look good!
The nearest thing I have to a BBQ gun is a Colt Custom Combat Commander,  stainless steel with dark, checkered, rosewood but I like the contrast.  Most all of the "dress-up" on this pistol is internal.  It and I are joined-at-the-hip so it isn't nearly as pretty as it use to be.
Do a google or dogpile for "custom pistol grips" and see what you come up with.

SIGs are so "mechanical"-looking that it's hard to pretty them up ... except as machines (which is OK). Beyond grips (and there are any number of options there), there's quite a variety of finishes.  I hear hard chrome is perhaps the toughest/most utilitarian ... and I think looks pretty cool.  Take a look at TJs Custom Guns.  He's kind of "da man" when it comes to SIGs; does quite a variety of finishes and other treatments.  Even if you didn't have him do the work, it might give you some ideas.
