.45-70 -- The PERFECT sniper rifle?
« on: November 23, 2005, 03:57:53 AM »
Some of you are going to think I’ve lost my marbles, but I assure you I have not.

Last night I was reading an article about Hornady’s LeverEvolution ammunition and Hornady’s claim that in some circumstances it can double the range of our beloved Marlins.  We, of course, know that the new ammunition can’t double the range of good handloads, but nevertheless it got me to thinking – what if we could ***REALLY *** extend the range of our Marlins?

Thinking is always a dangerous thing for me.  I started by mulling over the 19 handloads I’ve worked up for the .45-70, which range from 1100fps to 2200fps with bullets as diverse as 300g to 500g.  Somehow I got to thinking about sniper rifles, followed by the primary problem encountered by snipers – evasion from the inevitable pursuit.

What happened next was really bizarre – I got to thinking about the possibilities of extending the range in a manner measured not in yards but in ***HOURS***.  Think about what this would mean - you could squeeze the trigger today and the bullet impacts the target ***TOMORROW***.  A sniper could shoot and leave the scene before his intended target even arrived!  Talk about a head start in getting away!

Then another thought struck me – what if we could squeeze the trigger and have the bullet impact ***YESTERDAY***???  For snipers that would mean you wouldn’t have to even be at the scene until much later!  And think about the possibilities for ***HUNTERS***!!!

We all know, of course, that this simply isn’t possible, right?   WRONG!

Although I have not tested the theory, I have done the calculations and am convinced that it is completely possible.  Furthermore, I discovered that I HAVE ALREADY DEVELOPED THE LOADS THAT CAN DO THIS!!!

There are LIMITATIONS, of course.  To shoot into TOMORROW you must shoot WITH the earth’s rotation while to shoot into YESTERDAY you must shoot against the earth’s rotation.  But if you only want to shoot HOURS into the future or the past you can shoot in either direction!

OK, by now you all are thinking I’ve been working to hard and am in desperate need of a vacation.  Or maybe that the LSD I took back in the ‘60’s has finally fried my brain.  I assure you that is not the case, that I am well rested and relaxed and am not on any drugs.  The calculator doesn’t lie and there is no mistake in my formulas.

In fact, I am so sure my calculations are correct that I would gladly bet $1,000 on it!

So suspend your disbelief for a second and assume I am correct – would this make the Marlin .45-70 the perfect sniper rifle?

And hunter’s – you wouldn’t you like to extend the season by a couple days, one on either end?

I can't see the 45/70 as a sniper rifle but I can see it as an excellent rifle to have handy for close encounters of the third kind with nasty aliens that all horror movies have shown to be resistant  to them tiny bullets that get squirted out of AR-15 and similar people shooters.  Dennis

Is this going to require the use of premium bullets?

That is uncertain at this time!   I'm generally of the opinion that while premium bullets are always a good choice when confronted by hostile alien creatures its best to use whatever you've currently got in your rifle rather than requesting a ceasefire while you change ammo.  Dennis

Which powder were you using when you develoed these loads.  And by changing the powder, how does this impact the time delay/forwarding properties of your loads.

And does the choice of FP, HP, or RN impact the timing of the precise delivery time of the projectile?

There are a lot of variables!  But the short answer is “Yes”.  And “No”.  It depends…

As I’ve studied the matter further I’ve determined it is possible to do the following:

1. Shoot into YESTERDAY and have the bullet land YESTERDAY or TODAY or TOMORROW.
2. Shoot into TODAY and have the bullet land YESTERDAY or TODAY or TOMORROW.
3. Shoot into TOMORROW and have the bullet land YESTERDAY or TODAY or TOMORROW.

Of course it is all possible you just have to make sure your enemy in in another time zone or across the international date line.

Nice one Coyote Hunter. :)

That may explain where some of my bullets went.  They should'a been on the paper, but maybe they went into yesterday instead.

Okay Coyote Hunter,

Let's say that your trophy buck of a lifetime was east of you a day ago.  That means you have to shoot west to hit it yesterday.   Exactly how many clicks do you have to raise your sight to account for bullet drop for the distance of the circumference of the earth?  Won't your bullet fly out into space at that trajectory?  After all, if your bullet leaves the gravitational pull of the earth, you. . .I mean, your calculations. . . could be a little off.

You could shoot into last week but not next week.  Unless you were shooting on Saturday...

. . .so if you shoot into the earth's rotation, you shoot into yesterday, if you shoot with the earth's rotation, you shoot into tomorrow. . .so I guess that means if you shoot perpendicular to the earth's rotation, say toward the north pole, then your bullet will indefinitely suspended in time?

ROFLMAO!!!  What planet are YOU from???   ;)

Actually, it depends on where you shoot from.

Shooting perpendicular to the earth's rotation:

You could shoot into YESTERDAY and have the bullet land YESTERDAY or TODAY, but I don't think you could make it land TOMORROW.

You could shoot into TODAY and have the bullet land YESTERDAY, TODAY, or TOMORROW.

You could shoot into TOMORROW and have the bullet land TOMORROW, but I don't think you could make it land YESTERDAY or TODAY.

So if you shot a bullet into tomorrow at a high enough speed that it circled the earth and came up behind you while you are still in today, is the bullet in today or tomorrow?  And if it's in tomorrow, will you know it's there?

I don't think you can do that with factory loads.  You have to hand load to get to next week.

I can't wait to try out those new Hornady Leverevolution bullets in my time adjustment load.  I do believe that might just be the ticket to make right all those missed shots.

According to my figures, the pointed nose should do the trick for me.
