'Yote, you're a hoot. Are you the same one who shared a venison stew recipe on the old Marlin forum? It involved onion, tomatoes, mushrooms, and 3-bean salad. If you're the same Coyote Hunter, would you re-publish the recipe? I could cook some while I'm waiting for my bullets to impact tomorrow.
Yup, that's me.
The concoction was invented when I was single and had about 6” of counter space in my kitchen. Had a real need for one-pan dishes and wanted something that at least resembled a well-balanced meal.
The recipe was always more ‘to taste’ than ‘a cup of this and a cup of that’. So vary the proportions accordingly.
By the way, I call it ‘Slop’ but my wife doesn’t like that. She prefers to call it ‘Slumgullion’. I looked that up on the web once and discovered ‘Slumgullion’ literally translated means ‘Sludge from the bottom of the sewer’ or something along those lines.
The way I prepare it the result is like chili in consistency but not in taste. Eat with a spoon and sourdough bread if you have any. Like potato salad, taste improves after it sits for a day or so in the ‘fridge. Freezes well – we freeze some every year and use the resulting blocks to keep things in the cooler cold.
I make mine in the same pan I make spaghetti in.
HereÂ’s the general idea:
1-2 pounds ground lean meat, browned. Drain if you like.
Then add the rest and simmer:
2 big cans stewed tomatoes. Diced or whole as you please. Or as you have in your pantry.
2 cans tomato paste. Or sauce. Or both, which is what I usually do, which makes it 4 cans total.
2 cans 3-bean salad, juice and all. The kind WITHOUT garbanzo beans. This gives the concoction a sweet-sour taste.
1 can kernel corn, drained, or frozen equivalent.
1 can kidney beans, drained
1 can yellow beans, drained (I like the color)
2 large onions cut in large pieces (I make 3 slices then cut the slices in a tic-tac-toe grid)
More onions when the wife isnÂ’t looking
Fresh, sliced mushrooms are OK
A capful of extra vinegar if desired – to taste
A smashed garlic clove if you must – I think I like it better without
A dash or two of Worcester sauce
Avoid green pepper – I’ve found it really detracts from the overall taste. I like green peppers a lot, but not in this.
You get the idea – if it tastes good, use it. This stuff is a big hit every year and makes a great, easy to fix dinner in camp – just thaw and heat.
Enjoy!
