HUNTER INJURED ATTEMPTING TO RECOVER BLACK BEAR

A Cumberland County man was injured by a more than 320-pound black bear he had shot and was trying to recover on the first day of bear season, Nov. 21.

Samuel H. Beauchamp, 47, of Newville, was swiped by the injured bear and bitten twice during the encounter, which occurred in Huntingdon County's Todd Township in the Rothrock State Forest near Cassville at 7:30 a.m. Monday. The bear, which had been shot four times, died at Beauchamp's feet shortly after he had been bitten the second time. The hunter was taken to the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon, where he was treated and released.

Beauchamp had shot the bear three times with a .444 Marlin high-powered rifle during a drive. While attempting to recover the animal, the hunter approached to within 15 feet and shot the animal again in the chest.

"The bear came alive," Beauchamp explained. "When he came to his feet, I turned to back off, but he covered the distance between us and wrapped his paw around my hip and clawed me."

After grabbing Beauchamp, the bear bit him in the right front thigh, and then the left inner thigh. Each time, Beauchamp managed to shake off the bear. After the second bite, the bear died.

Mark Ternent, Game Commission bear biologist, noted that incidents such as Beauchamp's are exceptionally rare, and generally can be avoided if hunters keep their distance from a downed bear while monitoring and determining its status.

"This is the first incident in Pennsylvania that the Game Commission is aware of where a hunter was attacked by a bear he was trying to recover," Ternent said.  "Any downed game must be approached with caution. Hunters should stay back and monitor whether the bear is moving, or breathing with the aid of binoculars or the scope on their rifle, before closing in to recover the bear."

.444 bullets

I read this this morning, and distinctly recall when the .444 originally came out, there were a lot of penetration problems due to the lighter jacketed bullets being driven at higher velocity going to pieces and not penetrating as they should. Just wondering if perhaps the same problem still exists as I have no experience whatsoever with a .444.

   Right GB;

Seems like it's the dead bear or the unloaded gun that gets you every time...

Add another one to that list..the tame bull...

"... and then the left inner thigh."  He's very lucky that bite didn't finish him.  The femoral artery, you know.

"After the second bite, the bear died."  Perhaps the bear didn't have the strength to bite any harder.  Lucky for the hunter.

No injury involved here, well maybe to the ego.
I read an article one time about a guy who shot a real nice buck. While having pictures taken, with his rifle laying across the antlers, you guessed it. The buck jerked it's head out of the guy's hands, jumped up, and ran off with the rifle sling tangled in it's rack.
Now how do you go home and explain that one to the wife??  ??? :-[ ???
Honey, sweetie, I "NEED" to buy a new gun.  Ouch.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.

A 444 Marlin is no more powerful than a 44 Magnum.

Which in return has about the same ballistics as a 30 / 30 rifle.

The big lead bullet has a lot of kerwhop -but doesn't penetrate well - expecially on a 300 lbs plus bear.

Too many Dirty Harry movies and too little information is what led to that man being bit.

When I shoot something 4 times with a 180 Grain Sierra Game King bullet out of my 300 Winchester Magnum - all that is left is Hamburger.

As for the lost rifle, I am sure that someone either found the deer or the rifle.

I shot the last buck in camp - before my Uncle sold our hunting camp 7 years ago and I cut the slit in the ear and attached the tag and when I went to field dress the deer.  It stood up and ran away.  How can you explain that one to the Game Warden - when you shoot a deer and it is already tagged.

Luckly it couldn't go up hill and only ran around the bottom of the hill for about a half a hour before my brother shot it in the arse.   There was no blood trail to follow because it was raining outside and I ended up loosing my hearing from shooting a 7mm Remington Mag with a muzzle brake inside of my treestand and the echo took out one of my ear drums.

That ended up costing me about $800 and I sold the gun 3 weeks later for $300 just to get rid of it.  A $750 gun and scope.

My Uncle wanted the deer and I told him to buy a license and shoot his own!
