THAT TIME AGAIN...THE OLD MAN NEEDS A NEW TOY!
« on: November 23, 2005, 10:01:28 AM »
Well guys, December is just about here and I'm looking for my Christmas present (.22 handgun).

Been looking at the Sig Mosquito...there neat, but I've already have a stable of autos.  Got a match gun and a Contender.  About the only thing I don't have is a nice .22 revolver...all of my revolvers are BP or cowboy types.  Don't know if I can swing for a FA this year...but I don't want a beater.  Not planning to buck brush with it...looking for a nice paper-puncher/tin-can roller.

What melts your butter?

The Ruger Single-Six is for you, my man — new or used, blue or stainless.

S&W 617, a DA in 6 or 10 shot. It has to be one of the finest 22 revolvers on the market. I looked at a lot of 22's revolvers, and I always came back to the 617. I am a reluctant S&W customer, but they are showing a lot of quality here.

I'd also go with a Single Six.  You just cannot wear them things out.

How about a RugerBearcat, pretty nice size when compared to the Single Six its a more proper scale for a 22 revolver. I have found many 22 revolvers to be too large for the cartridge and easy handling. I like the size and feel very well ,nice wide hammer, halfcock(most rugers dont), mine has a good trigger, and is well finished. Pretty sweet overall package.

Hello, Mr. Moderator!

You might check into the availability of that .17 Convertible. I've been hearing rumors that there were problems with the .17M2 cylinder. Supposedly the factory has suspended the shipping of the Convertible model. Like I said, rumors- you know the Internet...

I would suggest either of the following:

1) A Single-Six, stainless being my personal preference. I have two, a 4-5/8" and a 9-1/2", both with adjustable sights. The short barrel is a Lipsey's limited run from a couple of years ago. The long barrel is a "Star Model" from 1974, made with the .22 LR barrel only.

2) A S&W 617. I've owned the 6" 6-shot in the past, but it had to be sold for tuition money. :(  I currently have the 4" 10-shot and the 8-3/8" 10-shot. (Graduation has its benefits... 8))

As you can see, I have a long/short barrel fetish. I usually pass on the medium length barrels.

Happy shopping!!!

I gotta go with totallycustom on the Bearcat. I bought one a couple years ago mainly for the #1 son to learn on, but it's become a favorite piece of mine. Good looks, fit and finish, and a really neat overall shooter. Check one out for shoots & giggles.

I'm kind of partial to the Ruger Single Six Hunter...22lr and 22wmr version.  I like the idea of having the option of shooting lr's or wmr's if I should please.  It is a sharp gun and would make a great little brother to my Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44 Rem Mag...

:cb2: If you're going for the best .22 revolver, get the S&W 617. This is a great small game gun.

If ya want a great plinker and can killer, the Ruger SP101 4". Rock solid and fun to shoot.

Of course, like they say, opinions are like rear ends. Everybody has one.

Well guys...I was just about to plunk down the buck$ to get a Single-Six Hunter when this Model 41 caught my eye.  The gun shop up the street just marked them down a couple of hundred buck$, under the nearest competitor in the area...I was hooked deep.  I didn't intend to waste your time...I guess I'm a sucker for target autos.

I REALLY like the SSH...my guess is that's my next purchase.  Father's Day isn't really that far off anyway...right? :)

Thanks for the help and advice guys!  ...Chris   :D

Well, now that you have your 41, I'd get a single six anyways.   :)   One of my favorites of all time.

Nice!

Ran 100 rounds of CCI Green Taget Comp through, ~50 rounds of Wolf Match and a handful of Rem Subsonics through my 41 today.  Sweet...not a single malfunction or stovepipe.  ZERO problems.   8)

The CCI performed the best in this pistol.  After a few adjustments, everything was well in the black at 50ft., with one hand on the gun and the other tucked behind my back.  Not bad for the first day out.  Sure hope the fun doesn't wear off soon.
