ENCORE MIS-FIRE this morning on a nice 6 ? pt'er. Heavy brush, no second shot. Rifle new this year. Using Winchester Ammo. Had 1 mis-fire during sight in, out of 25 rounds,,then it fired OK.

SAD day for me.

Called T/C ASAP.......They blame it on my "Aluminum" hammer extension, they said remove it and it will never happen again.....If it should happen again after extention is removed, they want to see the gun......They can keep it , if it happens again...

My gun smith said BULL___t !!!!! He says the springs is to weak, head space .002 / .001 OK !!! Hammer extentions have been used for decades.

Any other thoughts or suggestions........

Mine would misfire with winchester primers i put a stronger hammer spring in and switched to fed primers no more misfires.

Sorry about the misfire causing a lost trophy. Coincidentally, there was a fellow at our range last Sunday with his Encore. It is chambered in 308 and he had three misfires out of a box of 20 rounds. The primers looked like they were hit hard enough but who can say? Anyway, I told him that I wouldn't hunt with that until the problem is fixed.

All I use are Winchester primers and I have never had a miss-fire in an Encore. Thats with 4 different frames. I have also used steel hammer extensions and the only problem I had was that it was bending the hammer spur. In my opinion the skelotonized hammer on the Encore is too light. KN

I noticed that myself, and thought that the hammer seemed a little light. Sorry to hear about your misfortune, but I hardly believe it was the result of the hammer extension.

I had a few misfires while sighting in my 7mm-08, thought it was just a bad box of bullets, then it got worse. It would misfire several times in a row, I removed my hammer extension, and knock on wood, it hasn't misfired since. (I'm sure now it will misfire on me today in the woods.) I wouldn't think the hammer extension would have been the problem, but it seems to have been in my case.

Check out Mike Bellm's website. He has more info on Contenders/Encores than any one else! He does not have the Encore listed on the article for "Contender Misfires", but for the most part the info is accurate for both frames.http://www.bellmtcs.com/FAQ/contender_misfires.htm

I have had a total of 6 Encore frames and currently have 4 of them with different set ups. In all the years and different rounds fired, I have never had a mis-fire. I use Winchester, CCI, and Federal primers in all my reloads. Even when I shot factory rounds, I never had a mis-fire. I guess I just never got a bad frame or one with problems.

in your original post, you said you were using "winchester ammo" did you mean "ammo" or "primers"? you never mentioned if you were shooting a rifle or a muzzle loader. just curious....

Winchester rifle ammo in 7mm-08-----had another mis-fire this moring......walked out of the woods---NOW IT'S THANKSGIVING DAY !!!!!! made about 10 calls to every wally marts, dicks, thruway, and everywhere else.....found 1 old timer sport shop opened till 12:00 he said...asked what ammo he had

I ONLY STOCK FEDERAL, HE SAID, so off I went and 33 miles later, 66 round trip and out to the back yard.....Picked up 2 boxes of Federal 140 Nosler Ballistic's...Had to drop it a couple of clicks FIRST 3 SHOTS....then Fired off 10 rounds W/O MY HAMMER EXTENSION AND 10 with IT.......

AND GUESS WHAT?

?? 23 STRAIGHT ROUNDS W/O A MIS !!!!!!!

tells me something............THanks for all your input,,,,,and please continue...............

I had the same problem with my Encore shooting 7m-08. I was using Federal primers in my reloads. I have been reloading for several years and never had this with any other rifle.

I sold the barrel because I bought a Browning in 7m-08 and have been using the Encore strickly as a muzzle loader . . . never had any problems since. I think the spring is probably a little weak and if everything isnt just perfect it can misfire.

I've used nothing but Winchester primers in my reloads for my 7-08 and have not had any problems at all. But I'm not using a hammer extension either.

Good luck with the Federal ammo. I had misfires with Hornady and Winchester. One round misfired two or three times, then I took the hammer extension off, and it fired. I'm 99.9% sure the hammer extension was causing mine to misfire. I guess it wasn't letting the hammer fall hard enough. I hope your problem is solved. I know how I would feel if mine misfired in the field.

I don't know if I'm just lucky or what. I have an aluminun hammer extention I bought from Mike(*****). So far I'm using it with a 209x50 bbl using WIN209 primers with the factory breechplug. CCI 400 small rifle primers with the 25 ACP conversion. No problems.

I also have a 223 bbl and reload exclusively and use CCI 400 primers. A 308win bbl. I have only shot about 30 factory Remington corelokts, and a few Winchester factory shells. So far so good never had a misfire.

My friend has a hammer extension, he uses with his muzzleloader, .243, 7mm mag, and 45-70, he's never had a problem. Mine never misfired with the muzzleloader, but it did with the 7mm-08. Just out of curiosity, those of you that have had misfires, what style of extension did you have? Mine attached to the hammer at the end of the extension, my friends attaches to the hammer in the middle of the hammer extension, I wonder if this would make a difference?

I had a hammer extension that I bought on Ebay on my 7 mag Encore. It misfired almost every time. I took it off and have never had a problem since. If you do a search on this site, you will find a lot of the same.

this is all very interesting. i was thinking strongly about getting a hammer extension for my 209X50. now i'm not so sure. if i would not have read all these posts, i would never have believed an extension could cause problems.

I sent an original Contender to TC with a hammer extension to be repaired for misfiring and it came back with the extension in the box. I put it back on, and have never had a problem with it since.

I don't understand what the problem is either, but enough people have had trouble with it, so now I have taken all the extensions off all my TC guns. Is just not worth the risk of misfire when hunting.

i just wanted to thank everyone for there posts !! i was looking to buy the hammer ext. but there are enough bad revues that i no longer want to spend the extra 20.00 for one .. just cant see taking the risk in the feild !!

I will be willing to bet if you take that hammer extension off you will never have another problem. It is not, I repeat, it is not, the primers or the factory bullets. Some springs are a little stronger, but the hammer extension throws the smooth drop of the hammer off when a mis-fire occurs. Some guns can handle it, some can't....why take the chance?

I have never had a misfire with my Encore, 7mm-08, or 6.5 x 55 but I don't use a hammer extension. I know I have shot Rem., Win. and Fed ammo in it. I have read the easiest primer to detonate is the Rem. bench rest primer. The bench rest folks lighten springs, trigger pulls, firing pins, etc to make things quicker and smoother but that requires a soft primer. The bench rest primers would probably cure the problem of misfires in the Encore too. Years ago I made some .357 Herret loads from 30-30 brass and about half of it would detonate in a TC Contender.
After the gun was traded off, someone told me I should have been using pistol primers. Well duhhh.... - made me feel real stupid.

Never had one in any configuration with any ammunition other the one time I forgot to replace the rim fire brech plug with the centerfire plug when changing barrels.

I also have a hammerspur made of alumium which has been on the rifle since day one (needed to clear scope) because of fat fingers. Since you have tried different ammo and solved your problem I would say a component in the previous ammo was the problem. JMHO

I had a problem while sighting a 243 barrel in, tried 5 different brands /
types of ammo to see what the gun liked and when I got to the Winchester
silvertips 4 of 6 misfired. I sent them back to Olin and they said everything was to spec.
