How do you like your .31 cal revolver, and what do you have?

As I write, a Uberti 1849 pocket revolver is on the way. I was wondering what you think about your .31 revolver......comments?

Overall length is 9" and is 1lb 8oz......pretty darn small for a BP revolver!

To me, it looks like it might be fun.

Hogship, I have 5 or 6 of them and love each like a child. I have extensive work on each and they shoot as well as any .22 that I have. I have slotted the barrel and dirfted a blade front sight to each of my guns and lapped the barrel of all but two of them. The lapping is for the highest degree of accuracy(not necessary if the barrel is straight bored and rifled). I shoot 12 to 15 grs. weighted then cut a volume measure for the charge. I have shot 2.5 inch groups with my farm carry gun. They are a real hoot and do well with rats and the like. My best shot was a measured 72yards on a crow that trying to rob a blue birds nest. You will have fun with that little gun. The powder I use is Swiss 4f real black powder. Tryit

Tryit, I was thinking of getting a 31 pocket pistol and was wondering about the grip?  I have fairly larg hands, the walkers fit me about rite, but my favorites and the ones that seem most natural in my hands are my 51' navies.  The 60' army grips are fit well too.  I guess I'm asking if the grips and frame are too small?

Thanks

Will52100....

If the Walker fits you OK, then I suspect the 1849 pocket pistol will be very similar in size. Personally, I think the Walker grip is a little too small for me.

My 1849 will be here sometime this week, so I can give you a report on how the 1849 and Walker grips compare.

stay tuned!

Hogship, my sister and girlfriend swear that my knuckles drag the ground when I am tired and my hands are fairly large also. The grip is small but I seem to be able to grasp the handle quite well. I like the small size and the portability of the little gun. I guess I just like small guns. Best to try one on for size. This is not like marriage you get to try them on until you find the one you like. Tryit.

Howdy Gentlemen.....

Here's the update:

The 1849 Colt pocket revolver by Uberti came on Wednesday. Overall quality looks real fine. It's too bad the darn thing cost $249. It was the best price I could find, bar one on Gunbroker for $239, but I hesitated to get that one. The Colt Walker was only 30bucks more at $279, so I bit my lip and bought it anyway! I guess it takes just as much labor to make the 1849, as it does the Walker. Anyway, long after you stop being bugged by the cost....when you buy quality, you'll always be glad you did!

Anyway......about grip size. The 1849 and Walker have very close to the same grip size, but the Walker's grip is about a half inch longer and flaires out a little more at the base. The Walker could have had a little fatter grip for my likeing, but I want it original, so I'll take it as it is. Amazingly enough, the 1849 pocket revolver feels just right......I guess it's because it's much lighter and smaller. I can barely get three fingers wrapped around the Walker, but only two around the 1849. I expect the recoil of the .31cal to be very mild, so all-in-all, I'm VERY happy with my purchase.

Too bad, it's been snowing heavily. I won't get to the range again until around March or April.......it's going to be a long long winter looking at the new pistols and can't shoot them!!!!

I was surprised to find the 1849 to have a five shot cylinder......I didn't know that!

I need some info on the Dixie Gun Works '49 pocket Colt, who makes it and do any of you have any comments or own one?In the '06 catalog it is $200 for the four inch model. Some say you get what you pay for and others say they have laid down money and got a wall-hanger and I read about a guy on another forum who bought one that was so poorly made it didn't have proof markes or manufacturer stamp on it and it outshot all his other wheel-guns..MISSEDSHOT.....

The Dixie Gun Works web site shows 3 repro revolvers like the 1849 Colt Pocket. One is made by Palmetto and lists for $232 under catalog number RH0098; note: it has a 5 1/2" barrel, which is not the authentic length for a Colt Pocket. They call it a "Hartford" model. Palmetto's reputation for quality is poor in my experience.

The second gun is made by Uberti and lists for $275 under catalog number RH0454. Uberti's reputation for quality is good, certainly much better than Palmetto's.

Dixie also has an 1849 Wells Fargo revolver by Uberti; this is essentially the Pocket revolver without the loading lever. It lists for $225 under catalog number SS1179.

The least expensive Colt Pocket I have found is offered by S&S for $231. It's made by Uberti and is listed under catalog number RFT472A. NOTICE: This link is to a .pdf file. I have had no virus or other problems with it, but if you are concerned about opening attachments go to the S&S website at the domain shown instead.
