SHIKARI MODEL 155
« on: November 24, 2005, 05:38:37 AM »
Over on "gunbroker.com, under item # 40389386,  is listed an H&R "SHIKARI MODEL 155. Cal. 45-70.  The listing claims a brass cleaning rod and the forestock is a bit different from the normal H&R's and has a barrel band similar to the Trapdoor's.  Current bid is $155.00 but there is a reserve, so who really knows what it would sell for........
I am wondering just what is this rifle, has anyone experience with one, what is the twist and rifling? and at 28 inch would it make a suitable "Buffalo Type, rifle for the typical BPCR long distance shoots?
Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving one and all.

I've had one for many years. They were based on the Topper shotgun frame and are for Springfield loads only. The rifling is real cut, not microgrove or button. I have no idea re: the twist rate, but mine will stabilize 500 grain slugs every time.
They came with iron sights only and were not drilled and tapped. The ramrod is the telescoping type.
As far as BPCR, it's not legal for silhouette, although some clubs allow it for long range.
$155 seems a little high, but it's a good rifle.

I passed on one about a month ago at Kittery Trading Post for $95. It was in great shape, looked new!  I told myself if it was there when I returned (last week) I would buy it. Sadly it was gone  :( . The used but new looking .17 Mach2 was still there though and they came down from $110 to $105. It's home with me now for it's first Thanksgiving at our house, now I need a scope for it!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!!....<><....

I've had several over the years. Since they have cut rifling, all have been very accurate with cast and jacketed bullets. Only limiting factor is their older style receiver, making them limited to "Springfield" loads. But these loads have proven very effective on deer. The one I shoot now has had the barrel shortened to 20 inches, recoil pad and scope added. Also, one of these cut rifled 28 inch barrels could be fitted to a SB2 receiver, and then you would have the best of both worlds (Strength and cut rifling).

H&R Shikari

Hi TopperT,

I have a Shikari that I bought recently for $125. The serial # begins with AM which means it was manufactured in 1974. It has a cast iron receiver just like the H&R shotguns, and the barrel lug is silver soldered on, which basically means you should shoot only factory loads or Trapdoor pressure reloads. The 28" standard rifled barrel is very accurate with Winchester 300 grain JHP factory loads, and I have reloaded some Hornady 300 grain hollow points using both IMR-3031 and H-4831.
I'll be taking it on an Eastern Wyoming buffalo hunt in a couple of days, so I'll keep ya posted.
