I got that with a joke and decided to use it for a good laugh!! Here's the joke..

Quote
A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a
particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him
for a couple of dollars for dinner.

The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I
give you this money, will you buy beer with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.

"Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?" the man
          asked.

"No, I don't waste time fishing," the homeless man said. "I need to
spend all my time trying to stay alive."

"Will you spend this on greens fees at a golf course instead of
          food?" the man asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in
          20 years!"

"Will you spend the money on a woman in the red light district
instead of food?" the man asked.

"What disease would I get for ten lousy bucks?" exclaimed the
          homeless man.

"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you the money. Instead,
I'm going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with
you for doing that? I know I'm dirty, and I probably smell pretty
          disgusting."

The man replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a
man looks like after he has given up beer, fishing, golf, and sex."

That looks good, I like it.  It looks civilized.

I have a question. All the deer that I see on this forum are so small. Are they White Tail or some sub specie. The deer we have are much bigger at least halve as much. Three deer on a pickup box would fill the box pretty good. Unless they were fawns?

Is it the food the deer eat or. A few years ago I toke a big buck that dressed out at 264lbs the butcher told me he would go well over 400 on the hoof. My friend got a Mulie buck this year that the two of us had quite a time to hang up, at least 300lbs?

Fred, the deer we have here in georgia are "virginia whitetails" they are a subspecies as are the deer you have up there (i think) I believe the deer you have up there are "wisconsin whitetails" another subspecies....the only difference I know of is size and perhaps body build.....a big one down here will weigh about 180 field dressed..some are larger by a pretty fair margin, but most big deer weigh in that range

Going out agin in to see if I can do better a ten pointer was brought out of the place I am hunting in yesterday. I agree the ones I see are running a little small this year.

The further north you go...the bigger the deer are...some of the smallest in the country are in Florida..they are classified as the "Key deer"...they are related to the Virginia deer..but smaller...http://www.miamisci.org/ecolinks/everglades/keydeerinfo.html

Fred,

As a general rule, the farther north ones gets, the larger the deer bodies tend to get.  The subspecies have developed that way, as to maximize their particular pluses for survival in their areas.  In the hotter regions a large body isn't needed to retain body heat, hence they are smaller.  I'm in the mid-large bodied area (North Dakota) and am happy as I hunt for meat, not a rack.  I'd be pretty dissapointed to be hunting something for meat that is not much bigger than one of my dogs (comparing body sizes).

Here on the left coast we have Columbia Black Tails.  Tend to be much smaller than mulies and Whitetail.
My prayers are always answered,  sometimes the answer is no...........

Yes when I go to AZ the deer there are thin with practically no meat on them and rather long legs. They look so different.

On Vancouver Island they have the wee Black Tails much like the German Roe Deer. They only stand 2-0 ft at the withers, one meal and it is gone.

The deer on the east coast like New Brunswick are smaller too.

I am too a meat hunter and tend to pick young deer. The last doe I shot was actually a buck no horns yet. Yummy eating. But at times you don't have a chance to pick and chose.

The area I hunt deer produce very fat deer with 1" layers of fat and they look big until you take off the hide and the fat.

Here in NW Ohio our deer tend to run on the large size , In the range of 250 to 400 on the hoof .

Alot of it has to do with the weather here , cold winters and alot of corn to eat also .

I took a doe last year that dressed out at 245 . Big for a doe .

Fred, here's a link with anything you'd like to know about all 17 subspecies of whitetail deer....

http://www.kerrlake.com/deer/index.htm

Quote
The average whitetail stands between 36 and 40 inches high at the top of the shoulder.  Especially big bucks may be 42 inches high.  They have a total length of between 60 to 75 inches and an average weight of about 150 pounds.  The Florida Key deer seldom weigh more than 80 pounds, while the largest whitetail deer on record is 511 pounds.

s'32'

it sounds funny to think of an ohio deer that could go 400 lbs....but it happens.   i know i've seen some big ones in the n.e. ohio ashtabula county that were amazingly large.   i don't think people know how cold it gets here on the south side of shallow lake erie, and how the deer adapt to it by growing Big.

anyway, glad you took a big doe last year; and hope you do it again next week.
