NOTE TO SELF!

Trash that useless Dewey coated .17 cal cleaning rod and get a .17 pull through cleaning cord!

OK, I'll bite.

What problems have you had with the Dewey rod? Was it flimsy? Coating peel off? Did you use a chamber/ bore guide?

I ask because I JUST ordered a Dewey rod last night, along w/ a few other odds & ends for my eagerly awaited .17HMR Sportster.

I don't have a Dewey cleaning rod. I use a Hoppe's Boresnake for my .17's and it works great....<><.... :grin:

Yes, I use a bore guide.

I started using a Dewey rod, but the flex in it leads me to worry about throat wear, even with a bore guide.  Solved the issue by using a Patchworm, easy to use, inexpensive and they work well. I don't use brushes in any of my bores, rimfire or otherwise, so I don't need the rod. The Patchworm is real popular at RFC.

quick is right, the patchworm is the way to go.  With it you can get a tight fit with a patch.  Works real well.  The Otis System works well also, although more expensive, but I think you can get a tighter patch fit with the Patchworm.

As long as the rod coating is intact, can it wear the chamber throat?

I looked at the patchworm, seems like a great & inexpensive answer to cleaning such a small (Or any other) bore. I'll order one or try my melting skills on a piece of trimer line.

Just pull it out real straight, ever look at the tip of a fishing rod?  You can saw through steel bars with dental floss, if you pull the snake even a tiny bit  off line it will wear the muzzel out and you will end up with a very un-happy rifle.  These are very dangerous things.  Larry

MSP, you might wanta reconsider the .17 snake after reading this...

Pulling the Patchworm straight out the muzzle is good advice and not hard to do. I wouldn't worry about the muzzle wear if they're used properly, a good majority of the shooters at RFC recommend them, the biggest problem with them is user error, double patching.  :oops:

Thanks Quick, but I am luckily like the great majority od those who responded to that guy at RFC with the stock boresnake (400 rounds w/o cleaning!!!???), I have never had a problem with mine in either .17 or .22 and they work great. I may try a melted nylon string with a patch for those times I only need to run a patch through though. Thanks....<><.... :grin:
