10 gauge recoil that bad?
« on: November 26, 2005, 05:38:04 PM »
I've heard everything from "it hits like a 3" 12"
to "it'll rip your arm off and make you wet your
drawers"...

I know recoil is subjective. I know I need to shoulder
the guns again and make sure they fit me well.

That aside, for those who have shot both and/or own
both, how does the 9lb 10 guage feel compared to the
6lb 12 guage single shot with a typical round. By typical
lets say you shot a 3" or smaller round in the 12 and a
non-slug in the 10. Does a 10 feel like a 12 guage slug
when a regular round is fired? Will my bowels go loose
just by picking up the fearsome 10 gauge? Are guys who
say 10s recoil hard just pansies who should stick to light
recoil rounds anyway? What's the story?

I know the best thing would be to just shoot the darn
things myself, but it's hard to find people around here
to just let me shoot their guns (I'm not at the range
very often at all). Local dealers are not going to just
lend me a gun to try out either. I've shot the NEF 12
and it kicked, but it wasn't ungodly...

So who has real information I can get a decent idea from?
Sure I may end up just as confused afterward, but at least
I'll know the question was asked with the proper caveats
instead of a "I wants a 10 guage don't try to stop me" or
"what gots the biggest recoil 'cause I'm a badass?"

Thanks in advance.

Try the recoil calculator at handloads.com for your comparisons.  One ounce of shot is 437.5 grains and you'll need to add about 35 grains for a 12 guage wad, more for a 10 guage.  Probably want to figure 35-40 grains of powder.  Hope this helps.

I shoot a 10 ga. qitue often . I would much rather shoot my 10 than shoot 3" shotshells in a single shot 12 ! The 10 is more of a big shove than a sharp kick .  I currently have two 10 ga shotguns , one is an older H&R and the other is a Remingtom SP-10 . Both of them are easy to handle recoil wise and they do see quite a bit of use .

Hope this helped a little .

I'd take the 10ga at 9 lbs over the 12ga at 6lbs any day. my 10ga is a 36"barreled model 176. The recoil doesn't even come close to my 12ga with 3 1/2" . If recoil is your biggest concern then get the 10 and don't worry about it. If you are anywhere close to me I'd let you shoot my 10. Another consideration is ammo availability. What do you want to shoot with the 10ga?

Intruders.

Actually I want it as much for novelty as anything, but I
don't want to buy a gun I can't shoot more than once a
week...

There could be some goose or turkey hunting in my future,
possibly deer (no rifle on deer in OH). I already have guns
that cover my current uses but the 10 guage and a Handi
in 45-70 are on my want list. Heck, I have even less use
for the 45-70, but I still want it.  :-)

Thanks for the quick responses so far guys, any others
would be appreciated.

I don't feel like my 10 ga turkey kicks as hard as my 12 ga turkey using a 3 1/2 shell in either. That may not be a fair comparison but it is all I got. :?

There is nothing wrong with getting a gun just because you want it. I have a .223,.357,30-06 ultra-comp and a 45-70 and we can't even hunt with rifles in my state.

I've let guys at the club shoot my 32" H&R 10 gauge. This took some needling and ribbing but try it they did.

Is that it? Was the most common response.

If you want a 10 gauge just for giggles then I say buy it. I added a turkey barrel to mine and I love it as well. I also own a Remington sp-10 that is just as much fun to shoot as my H&R.

A 10 gauge is the shizzle for geese. Slugs are available but have yet to try them in my guns.

A 10-bore is not that bad at 9 pds., and even very good a 10-11 pds.
Certainly, the 12-bore Pardner I have with 3" loads feels like more than a .458 winnie.
In fact, I'd rather shoot the .458.
But at 9 pds, your ok, and if not, you can pour some no-8 bird shot in the butt stock.

I have a 10GA H&R Turkey Gun...The first time I shot it the thing put a wallop on me.  I wasn't sure what to expect.  After that first experience I invested in a recoil reducing measure.  I purchased a Mercury Recoil Reducer tube to place in my stock bolt hole.  Here's the link in case anyone is interested:

http://mercuryrecoil.com/suppressors/index.htm#top

The owner cut my suppressor to a custom length for me so that it filled the entire bolt hole cavity.  It works great...This is the same stock, receiver and forend that I use with my 12GA Ultra Slugger barrel so the reducer works for that barrel as well.

My H&R 10ga turkey gun, 24inch brl....Kicks Hard plain and simple. You sit down on your butt, just like you would if your were turkey hunting, aim at a turkey target, shoot a few TURKEY LOADS,  I am here to tell you, when your all done shooting, there is no way, you will think a any 12ga kicks more. I have one of the newer 10ga camo turkey gun, with the factory recoil stock reducer (weight).........I know I took one hell of a pounding
patterning my gun. And guess what the factory turkey tube is junk (doesn't pattern well past 35 yards)

Little Magnum, I was not happy with the stock choke in my 10 either. I read about good results guye here were having with the Gobblin' Thunder from Kick's. I tried it and now I am happy with my patterns. This is with Federal #4's. It isn't cheap but it made me happy with my 10.

If you want I'll try to dig up the receipt and tell you how much I paid for it. I didn't shop around for it, I just Googled it and bought it the first place that had them in stock.

10 guage kick hard, maybe if your a wimp.. ha ha just kidding but in all seriousness if you don't had any injuries or sholder pain to begin with thw 10 ga. is not bad at all.  Big shove than a spike.  I feel my 12 ga 3 1/2 kicks harder.  Probably because its lighter. :D

i agree with the rest of them.  My 10 ga kicks slower and thus feels like it kicks less than my 3 1/2 12ga.  I like mine for goose hunting but it's not very useful otherwise.

I got one a couple weeks ago, I brought it home and started shoting it, my wife was there and I asked her if she wanted to shot it, she did and this is a women that is 5'5" med. frame she said it kicked but not bad, so for you guys that are wineing about the recoil all I have to say is suck it up. LOL

She shot some 3 1/2" 1 3/4oz hevi shot goose load and 1 1/2oz steel load I set there and shot almost a box of the steel load but I have shot 10ga's sence I was 16 shtarted out with a marlin 10ga goose gun bolt action 36" barrel now that was a gun.

just my 2 cents worth
