Black Mag 3 Powder
« on: November 26, 2005, 06:15:12 PM »
Anyone tried/using this powder?  I haven't used my muzzleloader since 2002 (haven't needed too) but this year looks to be leaning that way.

I have an Encore 209x50 and wanted to see if there were updates to the equipment used these days.  Picked up a Muzzleloader Magazine and this powder was advertised in it.  Cabela's had it for $29.99 a bottle and it seemed steep in price (but if I do the math it's cheaper than the pellets).  Just didn't want to spend the $$ without some research.

Guy at the range handed me a box of 777 pellets with 68 left, said he was tired of trying to make them work...made me wonder if this stuff was any good.

I bought two 30ct 250gr Shockwaves packs and want to go to something new in the powder department.  I have some Pyrodex pellets and loose powder left over and could try them.

Any thoughts, thanks in advance!

Thanks, read all and I'm either confussed or not...I could always let my wife decide!

I'll probably switch to some BM3 when I get a chance.  Might have to make the 45 Min trip to Cabela's this week and buy some...for all who have to travel long distances to a store like Cabela's and hate the fact that I live close, remember the closer you live the more likely you are to go and spend money.  This is either good or bad and my wife will definitely tell you what she thinks on the subject if allowed.

Remember it easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!!!

Oliverstacy,
I'm using BM3 in my Encore with excellent results. So far I have gotten 1 1/4" three shot group @ 100 yds. without cleaning between shots. I haven't gone past 6 rounds with out cleaning. It may can go more...I don't know. Accuracy may improve, if I spit patched between shots. I still have some learning to do with the powder and the rifle. It is real easy to clean, which is what I love about it. It will corrode 25 acp brass cases if you don't wash them soon after firing.
Some have had problems with the breech plug crystallizing, or becoming hard and clogged, where they had to chip out this hardened crud to get it clean. I have had not had that problem.
Give it a try I think you may like it,
Stan
