I cannot give an answer to those who would object and wonder at the need, however; there is a hideout weapon in my truck and it lives there.
Can I get to it quickly? NO.
Why do I have it? Because there may come a time when needed.

To me, the amazing part is the people with no gun at all.  When I was growning up, every man......almost without exception, had at least a shotgun in their house..........Every kid knew they'ld get a butt whippin if they touched it.........come to think of it, most every kid had a deer rifle.......I remember several 30.30 lever actions showing up at school for "show us what santa brought us for christmas"........

Now, it's not christmas in a lot of places, it's winter holiday.....

Home invasions didn't happen in those days.......I wonder why.......

Now, is seems most homes feel safer without a gun........Neither of my Son in laws own guns..........

Hide out weapon?  What happened to the time when most every pickup truck had a rifle in the gun rack mounted to the rear window?

I felt much safer in those days!

I certainly never thought I'd need to stash or hide-out a weapon; until New Orleans!  :x
If conditions threaten, however, I know just the right place.

When one is needed, it's no good left at home! As the Boy Scouts motto is: "Be Prepared"!

Not wanting to know exactly where you hide your weapon at in your truck, I was wondering if there would be some suggestions on good hide out spots for some of us to do the same.

Reason I ask is this; I carry a .45acp all the time with me, but don't like the idea of leaving it in there when I have the vehicle serviced, so a good hideout spot might be better.

I work at a place that "frowns" on having weapons in your car.  So I have one, along with a small GET HOME BAG, hidden also.  My car has been searched by ISP and IA four times in the past three years, twice with K9s, but they were drug trained, and noone has found it. ;D

An idea I considered is based on the "no one wants to get messy rule"

Get a tool box and find a way to rig a false bottom.

Then put greasy chains and tools on top of it

It should stop most random searches

Just a thought

Kid

That's the truth!

Also, in most vechile searches I've been in, both doing and having it done, the officer will only reach are search areas within reach.  And I have yet to see a LEO get down and search under the dash, short of running his/her hand over it and the edge.  I guess they don't want to mess up their uniform.

The "best" places to hide something is in pain sight.  My favorite is the fake fusebox.  Its from another model car than mine, but just looks like it belongs.  And if the LEO can get it open, they will see a fuse panel.  But behind it is my S&W M47.  Or the area behind the glove department and just under it holds alot of items.  And it can be easily opened from underneth.  A false bottom on the spare tire carrier works also.  And it "looks" solid.

For "deep" hidding, the engine area is the best.  Once again, false fuse boxes, a hollowed out not working A/C compressor, or other "optional equipment" can be installed.  This also follows the not wanting to get dirty rule.

BTW, I'm not putting down any LEO.  Until family and my "real job" pulled me away, I was an AUX LEO for four years.  And my "real job" in in corrections.  Want to know how to hide stuff?  Ask an inmate!

Also, about not wanting to get dirty........when we use to do whole house "shakedowns", the inmates would just catcall and hollar at us when we did it in our uniforms.  But when we would change into "Orange Crush" jumpsuits, all you could hear was toliets flushing!

When ISP would come over and do car shakedowns on staff, we just smile at them in their neatly pressed uniforms and bulky duty belts......

I hear what your saying. Too bad the good old days are gone? We used to take empty beer bottles back for the deposit and spend that money on .22LR shells, at 10 years old? Now I suppose, you'ld go to reform school for doing that?

Folks, I agree that it is a good idea to have hide-out weapons but a word of warning.  For those of you using false/hidden compartments be aware that in several states just the presence of these comparments makes the vehicle subject to forfiture.  Of course if you don't act like a smuggler, no one is probably going to look close enough to find them anyway, and like everything else it only becomes a problem if you get caught.  But the posters who have said most officers don't do a thourgh search of a vehicle are right, in fact most don't do a thourgh search of someone they have arrested.  A lot of it is how detailed the officer is wanting to be and how much time they will spend on it.  If the officer is in his/her class A uniform your hideout is probably going to get by, if they put on coveralls and get out their tool box probably not.  But for the most part if you don't act like a criminal, Law Enforcement is not really going to pay you much mind because for the most part if you are a decent citizen the officers don't care if you have a gun or not.  I know this varies from area to area and officer to officer but as a general statement I have found it to be correct.  There are enough criminals running around that Law Enforcement doesn't have time to fool with checking out what appears to be a law abiding citizen.

Victorcharlie, I used to work with an old timer who grew up in North Dakota.  His buddies and him would bring shot guns to school and keep them in the "cloak room" and shoot pheasants with them on the way home from school, life must have been much simpler back then.  They also shot jack rabbits for bounty and used part of the money to buy more 22lr ammo.  The store clerk would actually break open a box and sell them individual bullets.
As for a hideout gun I just throw a 12 ga or hand gun in the truck with me, it is perfectly legal as long as it is in a case and not loaded.  The state of Illinois will never have a conceled carry right.

SDS-GEN, we need to vote. Illinois actually has more than one set of laws governing the possesion of firearms. Where are from in Illinois, if you don't mind me asking? I'm in Pontiac, Livingston county.

lefty red, I see your from Illinois, also? Getting to be quite a few of us from Illinois, on this stes forums.

The state of Illinois will never have a conceled carry right.

That's what they said in Missouri also, but they now have concealed carry there and recriprocal agreement with a bunch of other states now. And a couple of years back in my state (Alabama) we wanted the Castle Doctrine here like Florida voted in. They said we would never get that, but it went into effect here back in July. Keep after them Dem's and things just might change in your state.  ;)

When has a vote or the political process ever helped a gun owner in Illinois?  If you look you might find one or two but there are far more people against guns in Illinois than for them.  (This rant should be on the Politics/Gov page.)   The problem is there are way too many dumb, sheep, liberals in the Chicago area voting way too many liberal, democrat, crooks into office.  As long as Chicago is governing down-state Illinois we will have to put up with draconian gun laws.  Take our former governor Ryan for instance, he ripped the people off for his ENTIRE POLITICAL CAREER and he wasn't prosecuted until he left office, I know he wasn't a democrat but he was extremely liberal.  Our current governor has been dodging lawsuits ever since he has been in office and was just elected to a second term by the dumb liberal sheep in chicago.  Mayor Daley (the real power behind many IL politicians?) also can do no wrong and dodges lawsuits constantly.  These guys could eat babies (as long as they were white anglo-saxxon protestant babies from upper middle class families or better) and they would get reelected to office and forgiven.  So until Cook county succeeds or falls off into the lake I believe we are stuck.  I'm from Henry county, by the way, a county that stands to loose hundreds of jobs if Gov Baloneyvich passes his "assault weapon" ban.  Springield Armory, Armalite, Rock River Arms and Les Baer along with Lewis machine & tool in RI county would all have to move out of state to manufacture firearms (the majority of which go to our armed forces and police).

Please don't let the corruption of the political process deter you from fullfilling your citizen obligation? Without the vote, we let them do as they wish. The last NRA count I remember seeing said there are about 20,000,000 gun owners in America and the NRA has onlly 6,000,000 members. We need more gun owners to stand with us and this CAN and will make a difference. Don't ever give up your rights to vote and excersice it!

I agree also. If you give up before thinking that it will never happen, chances are it won't. Always be optomistic as things sometimes change suddenly and for the better. Those corrupt politicians that you mention don't have anything to do with how long they have on thiis Earth. They could be replaced by somebody more receptive to our Constitutional Rights. Maybe not in the short term, but things and conditions do change from time to time.

Hound your senators and representatives with enough email and phone calls and they get fidigity about whether the natives are getting restless and they'r losing votes. It works about the same as a small dog barking and nipping, you know it's too small to bite, but you keep looking around to make sure. You want to be like that with them, keep them on their toes looking and re-analyzing the situation. Losing votes for them is a BIG thing! Don't overdo it or get agressive with them, but let them know your feelings about your rights.

I consider voting my civic duty and don't miss election day.  The local politicians, mostly, are good people, who stand up for people's rights.  The problem is whatever down state Illinois votes for Chicago has the power to overrule, and when it comes to guns they use their power very effectively.

Well, I can tell you that unless Chicago leaves Illinois, we will NEVER get a concealed carry or any other type of carry in Illinois.
There have been numerous attempts at CCW passage here in recent years and they rarely leave committee.
This state is now and will remain, proudly for those in power, the last state with no provision for regular folks to have a loaded weapon with them outside their homes, the range or hunting.
Our current governor will in all likelihood raise the price of our stupid FOID card from $5/5 years to $500/5 years soon as he has been threatening since taking office as well.
This state feels that owing a gun is the most heinous thing a common person can do short of actually using said gun.
The hypocrisy of it all is that ANY elected official is entitled to carry concealed to protect him or her self from the masses.
It seems they are afraid of us for some reason.
I love my job.
