30-06 AND 375 JDJ ??????
« on: November 27, 2005, 05:02:32 AM »
I love the performance of my Encore pistol in 30-06 but I want to get another barrel  for taking way up north for bear...I was thinking of the 375 JDJ but I dont know much about the ballistics of this cartridge.  Are there many selections of bullets in the factory stuff or just one type?

Does anybody have any practical experience with this round? If so could you please tell me what you shot with it and did you like the performance?  Did you use the factory round?  Accuracy? Bullet type?

Is this appropriate for brown bear or Alaskan Griz?

Also has anybody had a point of impact change that they noticed from switching barrels on your frame?  I have my 06 so dialed in it makes me a little hesitant to pull the barrel off the frame and swap it out...I know that defeats the purpose of owning an Encore but If I had to I would just buy another frame.

Thanks a lot for the comments.

I'll try and answer your questions in order:

Look in the Hornady manual and you will find data and velocities for various Hornady bullets.  The Speer Grand Slam in .375 also works well for deep penetration.  There are also cast bullets for this caliber, although ported barrels may don't really mix well with cast bullets.

I have a Contender barrel in .375 that has been to Africa three times.  It has accounted for zebra, blue wildebeest, eland, waterbuck, gemsbok, etc.  These animals were taken with handloads using 270 and 300 grain Hornady bullets.  The 220 Hornady FP is a very effective whitetail bullet and should do well on black bear.  Others have taken everything from elephant on down with this caliber.  It should suffice for your purposes.

I have not noted a change in the point of impact from switching barrels on my Contenders. In fact, many years ago I tested this by removing and replacing a barrel for each shot in a five shot group.  I then shot another group without removing the barrel.  I could not tell in difference in my .223 or .309JDJ barrels.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, I was also wondering if anybody had used this on Dangerous game. ? Results?

Also Does anyone know or shoot the 30-06 cased 375 JDJ vs. the 444Marlin cased 375 JDJ?  Advantages?

It's probably best to stay with the rimmed 444 marlin case over the rimless 30-06 case.

In my experience and others I have shot with for over 20 years using the contender, the rimmed cases have seemed to perform better mainly since the extractor actually helps in setting the depth the brass can seat in to the chamber, which will help in getting the proper head space.

This is just what I have found. Also I have never had a misfire using the rimmed cases, where I have had several using the rimless.

I will look and see if I can find the explanation I saw a couple years back explaining the benefits of rimmed cases over rimless that was written by a custom barrel maker. I can't remember who it was, so it may take a little time. When I find it, I will post it for you.

Good shooting,

HL
