Remington VLS-308...
« on: November 27, 2005, 06:39:18 AM »
I have been looking into the Remington VLS and the Savage Law Enforcement chambered for 308. I wanting a 26" Bull Barreled 308 for long distance target shooting, is what I will be using this for. And I have heard good reports about both, but I have always been a fan of Remington and the strength of the 700 action. I would probably be mounting a Burris Signature Select 6-24 or 8-32 Mil Dot on it.
I'm looking for feedback and opinions on the VLS. Performance, fit, recoil, anything you can give will be much appreciated.

I did notice that the twist rate was 1-12.  Which I find strange for a .308 cal which is usually 1-10.
But then again it is labeled "Varmint", so I guess this lends to the lighter bullets.
If anyone has one, what's the heaviest grain of bullet that performs accurately in this model?
I will be loading Sierra Matchkings and Gamekings, and would like to go with the 168grain, though I would want to try the 175 and slightly higher too 180 on occasion.

I don't have a .308 VLS but a 700P. It shoots the 168 Sierra pretty well. It also has the 1 in 12" barrel.

Top highpower shooters often use 1:11" twists on their .308s when firing the 168s, getting 0.5 moa out to 600 yards.  Unless you want to shoot bullets over 175 grains that 12" twist should do fine.  It may work okay for heavier bullets too if you don't want them to shoot that far.

My VLS would shoot about .70 inch at 100 yards consistantly with factory ammo.
I used the Remington Gold Box 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and Winchester Supreme 168 gr Ballistic Silvertips (Don't use these on Game, I had a bad experience).
Had a Leupold Vari-X II 6-18x40mm
I enjoyed it, but the kind of hunting I was doing changed and it got heavy for the hunting I am doing now.

Didn't really shoot anything else, I knew I wanted to shoot the 165's, best for this caliber in my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. It all helps a lot. I am ready to go with a full fledged target rifle and I want it in 308. I would love it if Remington would just chamber the XR-100 for 308. Hopefully next year. But still I have the VLS in sight.

take a look at www.long-range.com to see what the camp perry shooters have to say.   www.nationalmatch.us is the other site, i think.

the savage barrel will probably wear out quickly on you, being button-rifled like they are.   so plan on re-barreling even if it shoots decently.
Yet a little while and the wicked man shall be no more.   Though you mark his place he will not be there.   Ps. 37.

SS, not a big fan of the Savages and button rifled barrels I can see from you past posts :) .
I still like a 1-10, but there are several out there with 1-11, 12 twists that are more than happy, and are getting great results. So that easies my mind a little.
And thanks for the links :agree:
