Browning 1885 Traditional Hunter 45-70
« on: November 27, 2005, 01:21:44 PM »
Picked up this weekend a NIB Browning 1885 Traditional Hunter in 45-70.
I have really been wanting to order one of the new Win 1885's in 38-55 but, saw this beauty  at a fair price so I had to take it home with me.
The wood on it is fantastic and almost makes me scared to shoot it.
Now  to find a 38-55 to keep it company.  Thanks.....  I had to share my good fortune with the forum..

That is good fortune! The Traditional Hunters I've seen all had above average wood, and seemed to be well fitted too. I'm looking forward to hearing how it shoots! Congratulations!

Iowahunter:  Nice rifle!  What do they hunt in Iowa with a 45-70?  If you plan on some steel plate hunting as in Buffalo matches, mid and long range shooting to 1000 yds,  you might be interested in the rifle matches at Ackley, IA.  There are also some cowboy rifle matches at the Des Moines club where they shoot to about 400 yds., and some Schuetzen shooting up at Steamboat Springs, Eldora area....  Best regards steve witt, waterloo

I'll probably hunt those deadly paper targets with it if I shoot it at all.  Although they did open up a rifle season for does in southern iowa later in the yr.  I have heard about the rifle matches in western Ia but , with my work schedule its hard to plan that far in advance.  Are you in Waterloo?
We ride the quads up there sometimes. I'm just abit south of you.  Palo

Iowahounter.  Yes I'm in W'loo.  The rifle shoots I'm talking about are actually held at the range in Ackley, Iowa  still not too far from you.  If you get a chance next Spring, (year) check out the shoots and come by and watch, or participate.  Most shoot BP.  If I can help let me know. steve witt

Steve, Thanks for the offer of help,  I'll probably be asking for it LOL.  I see Ackley isn't as far as I had thought it was. Hr and a half or so from here.  What type of shoot do they hold there? Target, sillywet, ect ? Also any memberships needed to any orgaizations?  I currently only shoot smokless after one (very)short stint with black powder. Thats another story LOL  If its easier for comunication you can email me at Iowahunter@netins.net   Just be sure to make the subject matter something I'll recognize or it will be deleted.
  Thanks  Kevin

Kevin:  Check out www.leadbucket.com/cvr/   That is the Cedar Valley Regulators web site.  CVR is a possee group of NCOWS, a cowboy action shooting organization..  CVR holds the rifle shoots at the Ackley Ia.  Range.   Next years schedule includes at least two  40 rd silhouette shoots, three, 2 day 100 rd. Buffalo shoots, Spring and Fall 2 day , Mid Range 200Yd. to 600yd, and 800Yd-1000yd Long Range matches.  And I believe they will have a couple Big Bore Fun Matches, which is amix of a little of anything.    Most shoot BP, but smokeless is allowed, but is not considered for the awards.  Period dress is also requested, but notg mandatory of new shooters..  Please keep it in mind for next year.    steve witt

Please don't tell me this is one with the tang sight,  if it is I will hate you forever.  I have wanted one for years.

Of course you could 'redeem' yourself  by helping me find one.
