Walther P99QA vs Springfield XD
« on: November 28, 2005, 01:26:41 PM »
I'm not new to hand guns, however I'm contemplating purchasing another handgun.  I currently have several, including a Beretta 96 w/extra Ciener slide for .22 conversion, another extra .357sig barrel for the 96', trigger job, lowering pull to 3.5#'s, along with a number of extra's, S&W 2206, Taurus 669, black powder mountain pistol, T/C in several cal. S&W mod. 39, along with a number of others over the years.

I also have a concealed carry permit, however none of the weapons I posess are what I consider a good concealed weapon candidate.

I think I've narrowed the next purchase down to a 9mm, not to light, I don't think I want an XD sub-compact, although it looks very easy to conceal, I don't think it's to controllable at a high rate of fire.  Just my feeling.

I think I've narrowed it down to a choice between a Walther P99QA or a Springfield XD in 9mm.  I wonder if I could get your opinions regarding the quality, workmanship, reliability, etc. between the 2 and maybe throw in another choice if you think these don't fit the bill .

The XD I have has now been through 2500 rounds, I know, it's still new, but still 0 incidents of unreliability.  Good accuracy, comfortable to use and easy to maintain.  Priced around $400.
No experience at all with the 99

Can't help with the Walther, but based on my observations at IDPA matches, the fullsize HDs appear to be pretty solid handguns. To me the "compact" HD is not what I'd call compact. The sucker looks huge to me! Have you considered one of the polymer Kahrs? Considerably smaller than the HD and highly regarded as a carry weapon. One other I might mention is the Kel tec P-11. It weighs in at about a pound loaded and about the size of the Kahr. If price makes a difference, the Kel tec is under $250, and the Kahr is about twice that. Even 9mms weighing in under a pound are quite controllable in rapid fire by an experienced shooter such as yourself. Enjoy the hunt~
