45 cal Muzzleloader sales

I have been looking for a new muzzleloader.  I noticed that most of the muzzleloader that are on sale are 45 cal.  Is there something coming down the pipe that is going to make them illegal to use.  Any info you may have on this would be great.

I think it is that the 50 Cal is the most popular. All the shops I know will order you a 45 Cal if you want one, but they carry the 50 cal.  :D

The 45's just aren't as accurate as 50 cals. Their more finicky for some reason.

Sorry to disagree with you, but my 45 Cal Encore shots every bit as accurate as my 50 Cal Encore. I did not have to do much in a way of load development either.

The .45 is not legal in some western states for Elk or larger animals. You should consider that when going after a rifle. You can shoot the smaller bullets in a .50 by just using thicker sabots so there is little advantage to picking a .45 over the more common .50. That is the reason the .45 is on sale a lot as they are less desired. Sorry 45 owners; but those are the facts the way I see them. I know the .45s shoot real well and if that is what you like so be it.

Like I said Keith Lewis, the 45 Cal is not as popular.  :D

I think I am going to hold off on buying a new one.  I have all the stuff for a 50 cal.  I was looking at the CVA Kodiak.  They have it on sale at Gander Mountain for 129.99.  As far a I can tell that is a great price, but only the 45 cal is on sale.

You got lucky then. I hear a lot of folks having problems with accuracy with 45's. I know one fellow who's owned several 45's and sold all but the 1 that shot best. One he sent back to the company because the accuracy was horrid. The replacement didn't shoot much better. Even Knight will tell you that the 45's are not as accurate as the 50 calibers. The 45's just don't shoot as well. They're more finicky than a 50 caliber.

I'd only get a .45 if I wanted to shoot long lead conicals and I wouldn't buy a brand that wasn't known for doing that well.  Something like a 460gr No Excuses bullet that shoot quite nicely in my .451 White Super 91.  

If you want to shoot saboted bullets, the .50 is the only way to go because you have a huge number of choices in rifles, bullets, sabots, and cleaning accessories.

I think the manufacturer's push to .45 is simple marketing, just like Knight's introduction of the .52 cal.  If they've already sold a guy a .50, maybe he'll buy a .45 too.  But it hasn't worked so well so the guns are marked down for clearance.  This is no different than introducing the latest cartridge that does the same thing as 1 or 2 dozen others but you aren't supposed to be able to live without.  Just an attempt to sell more guns.

Knight will also tell you that powerbelt bullets are terrible, but many people still love them.  45's are no diiferent than 50's, they just need some load development, and no two are the same. The most accurate MZ that I own is a .45 and I own 10 MZ's. It's true that .50 cal is the most popular, legal in the West, easiest to find bullets for. However the .45 does hold an advantage over the .50 in terms of trajectory. Even if both guns shoot the same weight bullets, the .45 will generally shoot better because the bullet is longer and will stabilize better. If all that your ever going to kill is a deer and the .45 is on sell, buy it. If your going to kill anything bigger, buy a .50. Just make sure you buy a good gun, because a bad gun won't shoot anything good.
