Is It Safe?????
« on: November 29, 2005, 11:16:46 AM »
My Brother in-law(oldest sister's husband) passed away earlier this year and while talking to my sister last night she told me she was bringing his rifles, ahotguns, handguns with her when she comes down for Christmas and giving them to me. None of her kids want them and she doesn't want them around the house anymore.  Two of the rifles are original Win. M95's in .30-06 and .405.  All of his firearms are in excellent shape but is modern ammo for the .405 safe to shoot in this older M95?  Lawdog

I would recommend having them checked out by a competent, trained, certified gunsmith......

Lawdog                                                                               In the Hornaday 6th addition reloading manual they list original advertised vel was 2200 fps and a muzzle energy of 3224 ft /lbs which is exactly what there factory loads are, In there loading manual they show up too 2250 fps with a 300 grain bullet and do not mention any restictions on older guns, As far as the 06 I woldn't be afraid at all to shoot modern ammo if its in good shape. But still these are old guns you might want too box them up and give them to me.  LOL I would shure shoot them  Cecil

lawdog, it is definitely unsafe. Send it to me for proper disposal! :)

Seriously, though, the 95 action was specifically designed for smokeless loads and pointed bullets. Winchester was seeking a military contract at the time. Just don't stick any hot handloads in them, and they will last another 100 years.

Yeah, I have gotten that from many others that have only my best interests at heart.   :-D

This M95 is in excellent to better condition.  My late Brother in-law inherited it from his Grandfather and he doesn’t remember his Grandfather ever firing it.  As far as I know my Brother in-law never fired it or if he did it wasn’t very often as my Sister doesn’t remember him firing it either.  I figured most factory loads for it will be like most factory loads for the .45-70.  Low pressured so they will work in both older and modern rifles.  The thing I don’t like on it is the tang mounted peep sight.  Never cared for them.  Lawdog
