Got some 180gr Nosler Partition Bullets to load for the Max.
« on: November 29, 2005, 02:38:22 PM »
My friend Tony just  took out a small loan and purchased a box of the 180 gr Nosler Partitions. I'm going to test them in the .357 max (hopefully on a Whitetail). For what they cost, they better shoot like a million bucks.
I'm going to test my current load which is 20.5 grains H-110.

  We'll see!

($2.00 bucks) Correction: that should be .50 cents per unloaded bullet.... that's crazy![/b]

RV, sounds like your friend needs to shop around a bit! Even with shipping, they're less than $.75 each. Even less if they can be bought from the Nosler store!!

Senior moment, that should have been .50 cents per unloaded bullet. Still pretty high. (BTW I don't drink   )

What kind of FPS you getting with the .357 Max in a rifle barrel of 22"  I'm just comparing the FPS to the .35 Remington  8)

Im putting the cart in front of the horse I guess.  I ordered my dies, brass and Horn 180 XTP bullets for the max.  And I think my letter to DJ may not have even arrived yet requesting the reamer

I also took apart the ejector.  Maybe tonight I should clamp my barrel in the vise and have it waiting a few weeks till the reamer shows up

But, I have been reviewing as much 357 max data as I can find, and am not satisified I have a good goal for loading performance out of a 22" barrel.  I chronied my 357 mag, got 125s going 2200 fps, - 1300 ft-lbs of ME.  Resonable, can the max get me up to 1800 or 1900 ft-lbs of ME, so for a 180 gr bullet going 2150 fps???  Or is that wishfull thinking.

Certainly, there has to be enough of us who have measured performance we can gather and not have to extrapolate from 10" handgun or 14" contender data.

I have achieved 2400fps with a full load of 296 and the Speer FMJ 158 gr silhouette bullet.
2000 fps is easy with the 180's and the 22" barrel.

We are so close ballisticly with the .35 Remington and the .357 Maximum it aint even funny.  I wounder how hard it would be to take a .357 Mag lever gun Marlin or Winchester and turn it into a .357 Maximum   8)

Montanan, It's been done, from what I read the 94 is a more user friendly platform for this conversion than the 336, but I've only read about it. Check with the good folks over on leverguns.com and on the 336 board at marlinowners. The 357 Maximum is definately a favorite. It has put meat on my table each time I've taken it out and had a shot. Can't complain about that.

Vance, It would be interesting to see how the Partition performs in newsprint. I know how the Hornady 180 XTP and the Remington 180 SJHP do on both newsprint and deer. It would take one more awesome bullet to perform anything like better. Now if they would put a heat seeker in 'em.... :-D
