I shot a big 8 pt. buck I had been seeing during bow season with my .410 slug gun. I was planning on shooting a doe to see how it would perform when he showed up. The shot was about 10 yards and I hit him in the neck where I was aiming and he dropped at the shot. I was in a treestand I bowhunt out of and had limited myself to shots under 20 yds with this gun. I am shooting 1" groups at 25 yds so I knew I could put the slug where it needed to be.  Jim

Remington 2 1/2" sluggers. They shot best out of my shotgun.

Kind of curious, what choke is the 410? Also I suspect, this shot was in heavy brush?

Tommyy01, The 410 is a 22" youth barrel with the last 1" cut off for a cylinder bore. I was hunting the edge of a swamp where the deer exit towards a field.

Hello MSP Ret, good to hear from you. I had shot it at 25 yds indoors and it shot ok with the full choke- about 2" groups but really opened up at 50 yds 5-6" groups. Since this was a cheap project I figured I wuld try it with the barrel cut off and it really shrunk the 50 yd groups. I have been reading about different opinions on slugs through chokes and can only report on my first hand knowledge. I would have agreed with conventional wisdom to leave the full choke but am glad I experimented. It could be that this just works with my shotgun and another one would shoot best with a full choke. I'm about to send out another receiver to the factory and try and get a 26" .410 barrel fitted with the scope base. I called last week and they said they would still do it for $35 which includes the cost of the scope base. I found the Remington sluggers at Dick's for $1.98 a box and they are alot of fun to shoot.
I plan on filling one of my remaining doe tags with the .410 but plan on a heart/lung shot to see how it will do. As stated before I keep my shots to within 20 yds. with 10 yds my preferred distance. I wait until the shot is perfect and won't take an iffy shot. My son will be 6 yrs old in February and in time I plan on letting him use the .410 on deer but only if I'm 100% sure it will do the job if he does his part.

That is one nice buck je265!  I am quite surprised that your groups actually improved after removing the choke portion of your barrel.  I figured the slug would rattle down the barrel like an acorn in a down spout.  :) .  Can't argue with success, congratulations on a fine buck.

Thankd Brett. I really didn't know how it was going to shoot but it was a cheap experiment and I guess the slug must expand and create a tight seal. When I get my new barrel I'll shoot it with the full choke first and post results. Jim

It sure seems like you have done all your homework and done everything right Jin, I congratulate you. It really seems to work well for you!!! One thing we have found out on this site is every gun is an individual, there are general themes in the accuracy department but when it gets down to it, what works for you is what works!!! Good luck on the heart/lung shot and please keep us all posted, this is a very interesting topic and you are doing it RIGHT!!!....<><.... :grin:

I was wondering if you tried the Brenneke .410 slugs in your gun?  We used to sell a boatload of those every fall, people seemed to prefer them over the Sluggers or Winchesters.

BTW, heck of a nice buck.  You really did your homework and it paid off nicely.

I have a Pardner in .410, 26 in. barrel and Full choke. I am going to buy a few different types of slugs in both lengths and see what happens!! Jack.
