help with muzzleloader choice help im afraid of something
« on: November 29, 2005, 06:10:43 PM »
Hi guys

i purchased a Omega last year and love it, in fact missed my 1st deer last season, but connected this season on a big fat doe    1st with a ML  here in Michigan

my question is   I want to get dad a ML   as a gift

he  will not shoot it a ton,  in fact i will due all the sight in and load work up  he will just deer hunt wiht it the few days a year we will go

I carried mine all firearm season her in Michigan this year,  instead of my shotgun.

Im leaning at a Omega as well  in s/s with syn. stock, or an encore (but $$$)

i looked at the new CVA Kodiak Pro   very similar to my omega,i like the price point and ease of use

  but something scares me

when the breech is closed and the hammer not cocked if you push on the hammer  (IE it gets caught/ dropped) with a primer on it  it appears that the hammer does contact the firing pin and can push it

My question is can/ will it cause the primer to go off

the guys at the store would not let me go outside and put a primer cap on it to see if it could

this is the same reason i stayed away from the Winchester last year

help

all help is appeciated

Personally I would stay clear of the Spanish Omega copy. I looked at one in Wallyworld and at first glance it looked OK. After looking closer I found a lot of small things that I did not like other than the Spanish barrel which I don't have a lot of confidence in the safety of with heavier loads. If I was looking to buy a cheaper rifle check Walmart. I just saw an Omega black synthetic stock blue for $169 on closeout today. I already have a stainless one which I paid a lot more for and I almost bought this one just because it was such a deal. If you cannot find that kind of deal the NEF break action rifles are a good rifle for the price and have american barrels. It is possible to order a barrel from smokelessmuzzleloading.com that will fit the NEF and you can shoot smokeless from it with their barrel also. Not a bad two rifles for small money. I have a Traditions Pursuit which has a Spanish barrel and I shoot only low power loads in it as it scares me based on the reports I have seen of blown barrels in spanish guns. I would not put a spanish barrel rifle in the hands of my father if he were still alive.

The Sidekick is the best gun for the money today, mine is a real shooter. That $169 for the Omega would be hard to pass up though, it is well worth that much. Jack.

The Omega is a great M/L, I like the Encore better though. But for the price you have the omega would be the way to go.

Here's a copy of my reply from the other Sidekick thread:

I have the Sidekick and have no regrets. Purchase a range rod and only use the rod supplied with the Sidekick for follow-up shots in the field.

I have found mine to be accurate: 4" group with 110 gr 777 and 260 gr Dead Centers at 200 yards. Although I have to add that I have the 25 acp conversion... don't know if that helps or not.

AND the barrel is easily removed for cleaning.

Good Hunting!
