Omega Loads - Frustrated
« on: November 30, 2005, 02:41:45 AM »
This is my problem....My buddy and I both bought Omega's at the same time.  He is shooting 250grain Shockwaves with 105gr of pyrodex.  This combo grouped very well with his rifle.  I have the same rifle, and same load; but I can not get the groups my buddy does - could not even get a "group" at 100 yards.  Any suggestions, I am very frustrated.  Please Help.

I use same loading procedure, brand new powder and 209 primers.  To clarify the shot groups.  It was bore sighted with a Leupold scope at 25 yards.  Grouped at 50 yards, but at 100 yards, it is 3 in. high on first shot, 2 inches low on second, and then 6 in. high and to the left on the third.  The weapon was swabbed after every shot.  I fired the rifle 30 times, with very littly to no consistancy at 100 yards.

Should I try a heavier grain bullet, (300gr), change bullet brands or put more or less powder in?

1)  Barrels are NEVER perfect copies.  It is very, very common for the same model by the same manufacturer to prefer very different loads and bullets.

2)  Check your action screws.  Mine was a a bit inconsistent if I did not get them tightened correctly, and the POI shifted as I tightened them.  I resin-bedded the action on aluminum pillars, and the gun is now "wow" accurate.

I would try a heavier bullet as you suggested. I assume the 105 grain charge is a volume charge and not a weighed charge. If you are weighing you might drop back 5 to 10 grains and see what this does. You might check your scope mounts if you have not already. There is also the possibility that your scope is defective. Leupolds are fine scopes but they can fail.

The action screws are the 2 screws that hold the action into the stock.

I can give you a dozen testimonials about different people's same model guns shooting the same bullet totally differently.  For instance, Redhawk's Encore loves 195gr .357 DC and I know 3 Encores that have trouble keeping a group on the same 8X11 paper...but shoot 200gr Shockwaves MOA.

My advice, just find a different bullet that shoots well in YOUR gun.

AndyHass said it right, not all guns like the same bullets. Just try several different ones and see which one gives you their best performance.  :D

No offence intended, did your buddy shoot your gun and can he group it?
Then check basics, check action screws as suggested, if scoped check mount and ring screws. Then start fine tuning loads.
