Ruger No. 1 470 Nitro Express
« on: November 30, 2005, 05:56:13 AM »
Hello all.  I popped into the local pawn shop the other day and they had a number 1 custom rig in a 470 nitro express!  Ouch.  The price was really reasonable.  The name of the gunmaker(besides Ruger) was on the barrel, hopped online to look him up and he was a local guy (Helena, MT).  I gave him a call and quizzed him on it.  Appearantly he built it 7 years ago and it was his first 470 but he said that it was a really good gun and was disappointed to hear that it was in a pawn shop.  Anybody need one?

Wow, what fun.  It would go well with my #1 in 458 Lott.  How much does the guy want and how can I get in touch?

They had $659 on it.  I can't remember for sure the name of the place, I'm pretty sure it was Dave's pawn:  406-449-5150, really sure in fact.  The stocks were a little beat up but they were just factory, easily enough to replace if you wanted to.  Also, it had a limbsaver or other similar variety on it for obvious reasons....  Good luck!

tempted to call

I was about to call them when I saw the phone number.
But then I realized that sadly, I have more Christmas shopping to do for other people besides myself, and none of them would really appreciate a .470, much less be able to shoot it.
But, this is a good deal.
If I were anyone else, I'd hop on it, and put it in a better place than a pawn shop.
If not, after I do my shopping, I'll see if they still have it.
Truly, I'm keeping this number for future reference.
Unbelievable price.

Ross Seyfried wrote about converting a Ruger No. 1 to .470 Nitro some years ago and it was a pretty sexy idea, I must say.

I looked into it and the cost and availability of the components was a major obstacle in my mind.  The 476 Linebaugh /  480 Ruger has made 475" caliber bullets more widely available. If ever I get the .470 urge I'll go with the 475 Linebaugh rather than the 470 Nitro Express.

I was reading on Midway's web site the customer's experiences with  a batch of Norma .470 Nitro brass.  He complained that he had to re-drill out the primer pockets in order to seat primers, and he thought that was a little disappointing for  newly manufactured shell casings that cost THREE DOLLARS APIECE!

I agree.

Other makers brass for the .470 is readily obtainable.
I've been using BELL in my .450 3 1/4"

Some others: Bell, Jamison, A-Square, Federal, Kynoch-the latter two can be saved from fired ammo.
