Chevy torque converter.
« on: November 30, 2005, 11:59:36 AM »
I have a 2005 1/2 ton Chevy 4x4 with the 5.3 engine. The truck has less than 4000 miles on it. If you can imagine the noise from passing over a steel grate in the road that would be the noise I hear when driving at low RPM when the transmission goes into overdrive. It's not a loud noise but it's there. Is it possible there is something not right with the lock up on the torque converter? My friendly Chevy dealer will check out the problem in a couple days but I'm just curious about the issue and if anyone else has had these symptoms.

I am not experiencing any attention getting noise from my 2005 GMC 4x4.  The assumption is that they have the same drive train.  I have close to 4,000 miles.  The vehicle is very quiet.

My truck is the "LT" model It also is/was very quiet until this noise started a few days ago. At first I thought it was just the type of road I was on. Afraid that's not the case. It does this noise on all roads.

Had the truck at the Chevy dealer today. The story is; at low RPM the torque converter is under strain and is causing harmonic vibrations that are transferred through the exhaust pipe into the frame. The cure will be to isolate the exhaust from the frame with special clamps that are also weighted with vibration dampening material.

There is a service bulletin on this problem relating to SOME 2005 trucks.

I will have the changes made in about ten days. We'll see how it goes.
