I have that one and the 405 HP, 405 hb, and the 500 gr PN. They all shoot pretty good, but I leave them as cast and don't size them.  I shoot 30 grains of 5744 with it and seat it at the first lube grove.  It's a 2"-3" group at 100 yds.  The mix I use is WW with maybe 4 oz of pure lead for a 4 lb batch.

perspective on .45 70 cast bullet

txpete,
I don't have that bullet but I do think it is a good choice for its weight and for its shape.  I do load for an NEI GC bullet of 365 grs.  For general shooting I've settled on 29 -31.5 grs of 5744 and it shows real accuracy potential for times of better concentration on my shooting in optimum conditions.  Also 40 grs Rx7 has done good.  I can't reach the chrony data just now but I'll edit it in later.  I had very poor results with the Lee HP PB 405 gr bullet.  It started off casting undersized. I lapped the mould with the kind  help of a member here and it did do some better.  For some reason it just did not seem to want to stabilize in my BC.  The 430 gr NEI GC also likes the powder charges I mentioned. I like 3031 and Varget too for .45 70 and IMR 4198 is close to Rx7 in burning speed but I haven't tried it yet.  Here's my  gallery of bullets; only one rogue in the bunch:

txpete,
On the closest bullet I have to yours, the 362 grain NEI GC, the 31.5grs of 5744 gave me and avg mvl of 1591fps with extreme spread of 29.70 fps and a std dev of 17.02 fps.  That's in the 32" BC so with your Marlin with the 27 grains of 5744, I think you've picked a winner.  I'd speculate a mvl of 1400+ fps or so.   But more than that, I'd look for some unexpected accuracy.    Oh btw I used CCI BR primers which are really the same as the CCI 200 standard LRPs  When I went to the Federal 215 MLRP's in an attempt to get more efficient burning with the 5744, avg mvl went up some (1614fps) but there was still unburned powder.  But with the superb accuracy I got (with the Feds as well as the CCIs), I figured I could blow out a few powder grains. I don't know if it'd cause trouble in your lever or not.  Just have to see I reckon.
Be looking forward to your range results

It shoots very well in my BFR as a max load.  In a reduced load it's all over the paper.  If I size it to .454 it shoots great at any speed in my SRH.

Well, Pete, I think you've got yo' self a winner.  Of course that is the kind of accuracy I was expecting, and you obviously did your part very well too.   Mighty fine!  Mighty fine!

no leading and after checking I would guess 1400 fps.I'll run some over the chrony when it warms up.
