The Marlin Papoose
« on: November 30, 2005, 01:18:35 PM »
I've looked at them for years and thought they'd be fun.  After recently having gotten a 1894C that I was very happy with I guess I was thinking Marlin because I now have a Papoose in my family!   I'm looking forward to taking it out to the range tomorrow.

Any other Papooses around?  How do you like 'em?  Thanks, Dennis

I have both the Papoose and the Mini-Mag, the Papoose's big brother.  It's a .22 mag, bolt action take-down.  My only complaint with these is that you have to re-sight the guns every time you put them together.  You have to make sure to get the lock rings with just the right tension to get good accuracy to begin with, but if you take them apart and put them back together later there's no guarantee that everything will be exactly the same, and your point of aim will be a little off.  Still good enough as a survival or camp gun if shooting at close ranges, though.

Do you have a scope on your Papoose? I can see where shifting POI would be a problem with the scope on the reciever & a detachable barrel. In theory at least using the iron sights on the barrel you should hold zero. Of course sometimes there's a big gap between theory & practice!

Took my Papoose to the range today and had a great time.  Bullet holes all touching one another at 15 and 25 yards shooting off-hand, and decent groups at 50 yards shooting off the bench.  I love my little papoose!  Dennis

The gap between theory and practice is there, in this case.  I was using the iron sights, I've never scoped these guns.

LOL!  What's a scope, I don't own one?

"the Mini-Mag, the Papoose's big brother" - Does Marlin still make these?  Thanks, Dennis

Last summer I tested my Scoped Papoose and found even after travel, disassembly, reassembly the zero held most of the time.  If it was out it was only off by a click.

I was quite pleased with the result.  The open sights in my Papoose can be manipulated with finger pressure so the zero rarely held.

The Scope made a bid difference in how well I was able to shoot the little papoose.  Fine little gun.

I got it used and the only time I've shot it at 50 yards it did this:

That was benched with a 3-9x40 scope (cheap leapers AO mildot)

I've shot it a bunch at the indoor range this winter and it hasn't shifted zero even after being taken down and put together a lot.  That was with the open sights before I scoped it, though.  I'm not the best with open sights on a rifle, so that may be just me shooting huge patterns indoors!  The gun won't fit in the case with the 3-9 so it now has a 2.5x20 shotgun scope on it.  This gun's going to come backpacking this spring/summer, so I'll get to see how well it holds up to tromping around.
