encore in 7 mag or 300 win mag?
« on: November 30, 2005, 01:21:12 PM »
I am looking to purchase a new encore frame in the next few months and researching cal.I have a 300yd.+ shot at deer(used to long handgun range shooting member of IHMSA)anyone have exspereance with either the encore in the 7mm mag or 300 win.mag.(used to recoil now have 10"444 marlin in g2,love it)hows the recoil and accuracy.Would rather be a little over powered, tend to like one shot kills and shoot for that.A nut for accuracy and I reload.I practice, practice, practice.

Thanks to ya'll

such large rounds in a carbine length barrel aren't very efficient. more powder burns in the air than in the barrel you won't get a whole lot more energy than a .308 but you will get a whole lot more noise and muzzle flash.
check out the contender/encore loading manual to see what velocities you can expect out of the different caliburs.
put em where you want em

7mm Rem Mag
« Reply #2 on: January 28, 2006, 02:51:05 AM »
I have a 15" Encore in 7mm Rem Mag.  It is a very accurate pistol.  I have numerous loads that are less than MOA.  I have tried IMR 4350, IMR 4064 and Blue Dot.  I mostly use the Blue Dot just because they are so much more pleasant to shoot.  I usually use 120g Nosler  Ballistic Tips since I have a lot on hand for my 7-30 Waters.  I have only chronoed the Blue dot loads so far.  With fairly light loads it runs 2500fps and 1/2".  I really like this barrel, but I did not hunt with it this year, I used my 7-30 Waters on a nice 9 point buck instead.  I have a 26" 300 Win Mag barrel that I will probably cut to 15" and put a brake on it.  I did shoot my 7mm (unbraked) with full power loads and it had pretty viscious recoil.  Full power loads were accurate, but I felt like the grip was going to be ripped in half!  I plan on chronoing a few to check velocity. :D

:D The key to obtaining accuracy in the contender and encore is to use the reloading data provided for the short barreled guns.  You can't shoot Xs with rifle ammo out of a short barrel.
