I am having a firing pin "drag" with my CZ40P. Translated into english, I mean I have a secondary drag mark coming from the firing pin strike on the primer that is displacing metal. I think this is being produceed during extraction or ejection due to the firing pin failing to retract before the barrel has begun its recoil cycle. It does not occur if you pop a primed case in the chamber. I'm concerned about its long term effect on the firing pin. Any ideas?

Don't wory about it?
See if a stronger firing pin spring fixes it?
send it back?

Never had this problem with my 1911's.

The porblem could be caused by either excessive pin protrusion or by poor timing. Check to see that you have .050" to .060" firing pin protrusion. If they stick out much more than .060" with the hammers down, they will need to be shortened. If your cocking rods are a bit too short, the hammers will not move rearward soon enough to release the firing pins from the fired primer as the shotgun is opened. If it is under waranty, call CZ and ask them what they are willing to do.

I'm not familiar with the cz40P but autoloading pistols such as the Colt 1911 that have this problem do so because of a couple of conditions. Usually it caused by a failure of the firing pin to retract before the barrel/slide unlocks. Caused either by damaged or faulty firing pin spring, weak mainspring or loads too hot for the recoil spring used. I have also encountered it in pistols with insufficient link length(1911). This allowed the slide to unlock much too soon... I find that higher pressure rounds such as the 40 S&W and 9mm are worse than the 45ACP, but the 45 is not immune. Are you using handloads? What caliber? I would consider a return to CZ. I've not had to use their service people but have heard excellant feedback from those who have. I'll post a link to their sight below. I did a bit of research and the weapon you have is a 40 caliber. It is a variant of the CZ-75 and a fine weapon. It should not be marking the brass thusly. Call CZ service and allow them to address the issue. I would appreciate knowing how it works out.. Perhaps it'll assist someone else in the future..

PS-forgot the CZ75 slide assebly is very similar to the high power and that doesn't have a link. It uses a cam to hold the barrel/slide locked together until it can safely unlock. Likely problems include those listed above and a firing pin damaged allowing it to jam forward and fail to retract. This pistol is a hybred of a full size slide and a compact frame. I would suspect a recoil spring or firing pin return spring problem.

If it was a used peice perhaps someone was dinking around with the recoil spring, if a new gun this seems to be a new model and perhaps CZ just goofed. I think a call to their service folks might be in order..

Got a lead from a friend to talk to a guy with lots of CZ experience, 40P included. He said it needed a stronger recoil spring/firing pin spring set from Wolff. It will have to be trimmed down as a set for the 40P isn't made but, a CZ 75 spring set can be modified to work. This appears to be a common problem with this model. It throws brass a country mile.

I don't post here much but, I appreciate what you do here.

This is a fairly new model but is a combination of existing pistols. You might call the folks at Wolff or Brownells Tech line and ask their reccommendation.. Sorry I couldn't help more, I simply haven't played with this one yet.. Come and visit anytime..
