Too many guns
« on: November 30, 2005, 07:01:22 PM »
Is there such a thing as too many guns. No I didn't think so either, but I have several in the same area of use.
A month or so ago I bought a whitworth 375 H&H, I also have a ruger 77 MKII SS 338 WM and a 35 whelen in a ruger 77 MKII and a 270 win. also in a ruger 77 MKII but the ultra light mdl. I guess the 270 is different enough, but the others are all very close in ability for alaska in my opinion.
I like them all but I can only carry one at a time. I hate having several fine rifles just sit in the corner of the cabin for months at a time collecting dust and little else.
The 270 was bought for winter caribou and sheep hunting only. I could easily use any of the big three guns for all my big game hunting in alaska and not be wanting more. Maybe I shoud just go shoot something, that will make me feel better.

"Too many guns" that is what the wife said.
But come hunting season she take that one, and the other goes to the father- in -law to use ,and my buddy wants to burrow one two.

Which ones would I want to part with ?
Well each one filled a need when they were bought .
Well "bye crackers" It is like givin' away one of the kids!
And like wise there is always room for one more.

If they are collecting dust  Reload, then you can afford to shoot more .
The more you shot the  better the chance for that once in the life time shot.

Hi All,

Too many guns...................... Hmmmm that's what the Police here tell me I have   they tell me that I ahve more than some of the dealers in their area   I just moved here a few months back. Now I don't think I have too many in fact there are some others I want to get like a nice Ross M10 in .280 Ross or a 1907 Ross Scotch stalker

Who is to say that "X" amount is to many?

Man you don't have many now if I only shoot one of mine once every month then chose another for the next month and so on ............... hmmmmm it will take me over 3 years to work my way through my rifles    :-D  but seeing as how I never take just one shooting and I rotate the ones I take hunting, some are better suited to certain places and cover etc    well you see how it is  :)  :-D

Brithunter, I think you need to move to a more firearm friendy country. I say this despite being a citizen of the United States, where gun laws vary greatly, depending on each state's government. I am preparing to move to another (less socialist state) as I write this, for gun law reasons, as well as other political reasons.

To many guns in the closet/ gun safe? Never.
To me, the only time that comes into play is when deer season comes around.  All of them will do the job and do it well but only one can make the final cut. Do i want the light one? How bout the lever? Big bore, .243?
This year my Savage 99 in .300 made the cut. Next year, who knows.

I think that you could solve the conundrum with a little creativity and wind up finding out that you may in fact not have enough. I typically hunt whitetail but find I am shorthanded based on the following "logic"  :-) . By designating each gun for a day of the week, I only have 3 rifles for deer hunting (not counting the 223 here) (there are still 7 days in the week   ) so I am in fact short 4 rifles. Also as I get a bit older, I find that it is nice to tote a lighter piece in the PM and a heavier piece in the AM which now means I need 11 more rifles to meet my self-imposed criteria. Hmmm, I left out backups and foul weather rifles so the number could grow even higher.........

Yes you need foul weather rifles as well as units you can use when you need to go through heavy brush and otherwise scratch the finsh on that 1500.00 unit. Then should you have other hunters in the family --- well . you got have that covered too.
I find just keeping things clean and reloading for all the above a full time hobbie.

Like I told the wife . It least I am not in the hotel!

Lets see now. You can have,

Enough:
1- 22LR
1- .223 Rem.
1- 30-06
and if you live somewhere like Alaska where it's needed.
1- .375 H&H

You can have too few:
Anything less than enough.

But you can never have too many!

I know what I should do I'll just quit my job and travel the world hunting and fishing, to make good use of thoose extra rifles, and all that free time on my hands.
Oh I'm awake now just day dreaming for a bit there. Maybe I'll just reload some more to keep thoose rifles warm.

  Thanks for the replies

Mmmm, isn't the phrase "too many guns" an oxymoron??? :|
Kinda like "military intelligence" or "government think tank". :P
Nope, never can have "too many guns" as an absolute.
"Too many guns" in one locker perhaps.
Solution: buy more gun lockers.
Buy 3 actually, so you can fit even MORE guns in.

I agree, there is no such thing as too many rifles, but you know your priorities.
For me, it's pay the student loan, the mortgage, the car,
save some for the deer hunt, for the kid's college fund, for the next summer vacation to Spain, for the birdwatching trip on the Rio Grande, for the $1700 binoculars...
Bla, bla, bla... But i still wanted a nice rifle, and to hunt with it. So i told myself: "you should have only one, if you want to do all those other things". Next, i asked myself, if you could have only one rifle, which one it would be? So i ended up with a Tikka in .308. I shoot it once per month.
I feel very good. Why, because if i would give in to the compulsive collecting, i would never be happy, and i would always want more rifles.
Now, if i could also quit smoking...
To each his own i gues, sure i would love all those rifles, but then i could not enjoy other things.

too many?

More like not enough space in the safe  :D

I set out to cover most anything hunt worthy, and I feel I've finally done it having a .223, .243, .308, and .300rum. Throw in the various Rem shotguns, some for tactical purposes and others for hunting, and Remington should send me a free gun safe, hahaha.

Im thinking about getting another 700 Mountain in stainless, and I havent had a .30-06 for years so that may be what I get it in.

A .338rum or isnt out of the question, but that and the .300rum are so close in real world uses that it might not be worth it. Same goes for the .30-06 and .308. But lifes short right? One can never have enough I say :)

I've been fiddling with a .338 lapua and wow, what a beast. Thats for another topic

If your a gun collector you never have to many guns. Never.
If your a hunter like most guys to many guns ( what ever you deem is to many) only creates a ," whick one do i take today" problem. It does for me.
That being said, having to many to choose from does create a
selection problem but it`s one i`ll gladly tackle.

Too many guns would be when you cannot maintain the guns you have because you have too many of them -- that is they begin to rust because you can't clean them and re-oil them maybe once every two years.

But indeed, the number of rationales for having an additional gun is infinite -- or nearly so -- in my experience.  I thought of a new one the other day.  The occasion may happen that I may want to invite someone, for example an out-of-town relative, to go on a hunt with me.  They may need to borrow one of my rifles, not just for the hunt itself but for shooting practice for six months to eight months in advance of the hunt.  Since I would have doubts that this relative would dilligently and promptly clean this loaner rifle after every shooting session, I would be reluctant to loan one of my current rifles.  I think I would want to loan some lesser rifle -- such as a used rifle I might buy cheap at a gun show or a pawn shop.  This is a whole new rationale I have never contemplated before, but now I am transfixed by it and am just about ready to go out and look for a .30-06 for this specific purpose!!!  Other such rationales readily occur to the less than fully occupied mind.

"Too many guns?"  Not hardly.

I mean, lets do some logical thinking here, there is such thing as "one too many guns"..... But I think the true reason why people get more than just 1 or 2 rifles is becuase they........... can.  They WANT to get more rifles, they enjoy having different calibers, they like to show off thier "small" calibers but deadly on target @ 200 yards, or have a caliber powerfull enough to rip up an elephant, or a VERY fast medium-size diameter bullet that travels at insane speeds (like any of the 300-375 wbys).

If you think hard and you enjoy hunting AND only hunting, you get one caliber that is good for ANY type of hunt.  If we are talking non-dangerous game, heck 30-06, can't go wrong with that.  If you want to do a mixture of dangerous game like bears, bison, and a combination of elk and white tails, one 338 win mag CAN handle all those with ease.

I think if you enjoy the sport of hunting and HUNTING alone, you get 1 or 2 rifles, and thats it, but I think people get more than 5 or 6 rifles (like my self) is becuase they enjoy having all that fire power, its just, a man thing.

See, I'm in a position like that, although I'm at the "starting the arsenal" stage rather than the "distributing the arsenal" stage.
I have 2 sons and shooter's rights seem to be heading south in a big way.
In fact I can see a day coming when acquiring firearms will be even more difficult and the reasons even more stringent than they already are so a small armory gained now seems a good idea.
Gun prices are heading north at the same rate I want to be sure my boys have something to use when they're old enough as they may not be able to afford the guns they'd like.
One is 11 weeks and the other is 2 tomorrow but, like college funds, they have to start somewhere, particularly if you want quality and quantity.
So in that respect any reasonable working addition is a good addition.

Slamfire, your a lucky man. I have one son that think's everything I drag in the door belongs to him. He married a girl with a son, now 11, that has no intrest in shooting at all, poor breeding! Now I have a 3 yr old grandaughter that sits on my lap to hold guns. I hope that as age get's the better of me that I can go to their house to retrieve a gun when I want to. Besides, it gives me something to complain about.

Just bought a new Mod 70 Featherweight in 6.5x55. Hopefully a some point my grandaughter will beat me out of it so I can buy another,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and complain! :D  nI like to complain, it's who I am1 :)
