Varmints, I use a Hornady 75g V-Max at 3800fps from my 25-06. Extremely flat shooting and turns groundhogs into red mist.

Deer, my favorite bullet is a 100g Barnes TSX at around 33-3400fps. Again, very flat shooting because of the high BC of .420 and the velocity.

Paper punching I will use anything. The V-Max seems to be my most frequently used bullet because I like to practice for those long range varmint shots. I seem to not shoot alot of paper with the 25-06 though because it is semi over-bore and will tend to eat a barrel faster than a traditional deer cartridge. (30-30, 308, 30-06, 35 Rem) I'd rather save the barrel for shooting varmints.

For all my "Quarter Bore" bolt actions I use the following.

for hunting deer - Barnes 100 TSX. deadly accurate and un-matched performance

for varmint hunting - Nosler 85 gr. Varmint Ballistic Tip, just better accuracy out of my rifles

and just plan paper punching - For serious target work I use the 100 gr. HPBT MatchKing and for plinking whatever that I can get cheaply(usually off Ebay)

Mine is a .257 Roberts.

75g V-MAX for varmints.

For deer and larger I  have worked up several loads but have yet to take any game.

110g Accubond
115g TSX
120g Grand Slam
120g Partition
120g A-Frame

Of the 110-120g bullets, I would prefer the A-Frame for anything larger than deer.

This is what I have used in the 25-06 that worked very well.
Varmits: 85 Gr. Nos. Bal. Tip
             75 V-Max
The BT was more accurate at longer ranges
Deer & Antelope:  117 Gr. Sierra SBT: very accurate & deadly for lung
shots, we had jacket-core separations, but never lost
an animal, but we lung shot big Bucks up close to be
safe. We did shoulder shoot some average size bucks
& all died right there, which is where we saw the
                           separations.
100 Gr. TSX- Very effective & the best ballistics for a 100 Gr. bullet that I
know of. Fine accuracy. One of the best all-round choices for
big game that you would shoot with a .25.
120 Gr. Nos. Part.: Real effective up close & at longer range unless the tips deform which does happen. From what we saw the 100 TSX will
penetrate as well as this bullet.
115 Gr. TSX: Good killer & extreme penetration. I have other guns which
are more suitable for Elk, but if I had to hunt Elk with a .25, this would
be my choice.  I shot one Whitetail Buck in the near shoulder & angled out
the opposite rear leg from a very elevated stand & I got tired of digging a
hole in ground to find that bullet. Yea, I shot it from high in a Stand.

The above are all good bullets for their intended purpose. This year, I went to a 125Gr. Wildcat ULD & it is incredible!!! It is a little soft, but
remember at 125 Gr. it has a long shank which offsets some of this. It
has a BC & flight characteristics of a 200 Gr. 30 cal. MK, which is unheard
of in a 25 caliber! The point does not get deformed, yet the front of the
bullet opens quickly. So far we have taken 6 Antelope, 3 Mule Deer &
1 Whitetail with great results. We used 2 Rem. Sendero's with all the
accuracy tricks we could & chambered in 25-06AI. This load was running
over 3,250FPS & with the BC of this bullet, @ 500 yds. & beyond, it will
pull ahead of varmit slugs, not so much trajectory as wind drift which is
the real concern. With range finders, traj. can be plotted, wind drift is much harder. It appears that in the .25 at least, I will never have to use
but one bullet, & this includes paper punching.
Your problem with this bullet, is finding a place to utilize it's long range
potential in NW AR. I lived in Lincoln for 6 years, great country. I now live
on the Eastern edge of the Ozarks, & I can drop down into the Delta Farm country to shoot some longer range Yotes.
For casual plinking, I use  a .223 or other smaller Varmit round.

My favorite is the 117gr Hornady spire point. I use it in a 25-06 and for anything you ought to be using a 25 cal, it's plenty of bullet.

HI Lawdog i seen a pic of a coyote shot with the TSX 100gr bullets  . They would make a good coyote /deer bullet. I am having some pick up for me when they go to town. I will try them out on deer next yr. thanks VM

Would have liked to have seen that picture.  I have only shot one Coyote with a TSX bullet but it was a 130 gr. out of my .270 WSM.  The Coyote didn’t look right and thru the scope he was very thin, with bones showing thru the hide all over.  Found out the reason when I got to him.  He had gotten his lower jaw broke and dislocated somehow and eating didn’t look like he had been doing very well.  All I did was end his suffering.  Lawdog

OOO baby!!!

Found a new bullet Im gonna try..

Lost River Ballistics 90 grain J36 hunting round. Machined from solid copper with an inserted metal tip.

BC OF .479!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For a 90 grain bullet that is truely amazing!!!! It produced a flatter trajectory than my V-Max load when shot out at 3500fps which is very doable with a 25-06.

Only downfall is they cost over 20$ for a box of 20 bullets not loaded.

Come back and post your results.  I tried the Lost River bullets and I couldn't get them to shoot worth a darn.  They coppered fouled the bores worse than the origianl Barnes X bullets and accuracy was so so at best. Lawdog

I have not personally used the Lost River Bullets but I have received info.
from a couple of shooters who have & they had the exact same issues that
Lawdog mentioned. Until I start hearing better results I will hold off on
these.

Hildy, there are exciting things happening in the bullet world! The Wildcat
125 Flyes like a 200MK or slightly better at the same velocity. I am trying
to avoid giving an exact BC, as the bullet maker has not published it yet.
Same with the new Barnes MRX, Barnes does not show the BC yet on
their web site, & I would not want to say what they are. But, back to the
Wildcat, my hint to you from my research & others shooting this bullet
way out there indicates a BC of about .580!!!! But until this is published,
the best thing to do is crony the muzzle vel. & again at extended ranges
& check your drop at those ranges & compute your own. I am trying to
stay out of trouble here & if someone doesn't believe it, I encourage you
to test for yourself. My personal testing & the drops we also experienced
on our Wyoming trip bore this out. And these bullets are no higher than
Accubonds & alot less than TSX bullets. This is why along with my previous
reasons in my earlier post is why I believe this will do everything I do
with a .25 which is everything from large Mule/Whitetail down to small
Varmits, paper punching this summer out to 1000YDS, the first time I
feel I can do that with a .25 & everything in between. Richard Graves of
Wildcat bullets made it easy for me. He told me that if I did not like the
looks of the bullets, I can send them back. Then he said if I shot some &
they did not group, I could send the remainder of the bullets back & he
would give me the money for those. DO YOU KNOW OF ANY BULLET
COMPANIES THAT WILL DO THAT? Last Summer in preparing for our Western hunt, I worked up a load that shoots between .25"-.35" with one
personal best group of .140". If this interests you, pm me & I will
give you more details.
You will not make peace with the Bluecoats, you are free to go.

When I lived in California, my neighbor used the 90 grain Winchester bullet in .25-06 for everything. Of course, our varmint huntin' was limited to jacks and the occasional coyote. The bullet worked just fine on those small California Mulies.

Hi Slamfire that is the load i am using in my 25 06 right now. Trying to shoot up the factory ammo to get the brass. When i get the TXS 100gr i will load some up and test them out. HI Lawdog I had a man tell me about using the 100gr TSX on a coyote. The way he sounded it look wose than the one in the pic. He shot it facing him and he shot it in the chest. it travel alway thru to the end of the coyote. Sounds like my kind of bullet. VM

Yes,  but you have to be in the Sierras to find the big ones, down in the desert the mulies run a lot smaller. They call them California Mule Deer, to differenciate them from the Rocky Mountain Mulies.  :D Johnsonville or Lake Isabella would be about the southern extent of the big ones. I hunted the Piautes on occasion, and they were the little guys there.

I don't have a 257 Bob.
I use a 303/25 which is more like a 250 Savage.
My all round bullet for the medium game I use it for(mostly roos) is the Sierra Game King 90gn HPBT and many other guys here in Australia use it for pigs and goats as well.
