About ten years ago, I collected a few older traps to be used only as conversation pieces.  Got rid of most of them but still have an old Newhouse No. 4 that a neighbor is interested in and wants to buy from me.  I really don't recall how much I paid for it and I don't want to lose money but I sure don't want to scalp the friend/neighbor either.  Anyone have any idea what a run of the mill Newhouse No. 4 might be worth in nice condition??  Thanks for any help I get.   :grin:

$15 -$40 depending on condition and whats on the pan etc. Most of the user #4s run around $25-$30

Blaster-----we are friendly. But few on here,deal in antique or collector traps.
 I sell new traps--those I can give you prices on.But not the price of a Newhouse.
 Be patient,your answer will come eventually. I have a few collector traps myself,but I do not have a clue as to their worth.

cattail and Bogmaster, thanks for the responses.  Sorry that I jumped the gun in my last post.  Since I'm retired and just sitting on my butt, I kinda overlook the fact that most folks on these web sites do still have jobs and are not able to have their noses glued to the computer screen, like I often do.
I will be patient and hopefully some more folks will come up with more rough values on my No. 4.  Thanks again.  Blaster (Bob in So. CO) :D

Tried to edit my post with the pictures and all I get is "this page is not available" So, I'll try it with another post.  The trap is 19-inches in length.

From what i can see the trap was made in the early 1880s.  I cant see the trap pan but if it is clear and not pitted the trap should be worth between  $100 and $150 depending  on pan condition and the rest of the trap upon close inspection.

By looking at the picture I'd bet that what you have there is  a #14; not a #4. Very few #4 Newhouse came with offset jaws. They were called deer traps and usually came with a cast 8 chain which that one doesn't have. #14's are fairly common but usually sell for more than a #4 mainly because of the teeth and the offset. They're still used by a few for beaver and otter. The value of your trap will be determined by it's condition; the better it is the more it will bring. We already know the pan is missing a number. If the springs are stamped and it isn't badly pitted it may bring $40-$50 from the right person as it LOOKS to be original. It may be that somebody put a pair of #14 jaws on a #4 trap; pretty common practice.

I had never even noticed the letters stamped on the springs.  Very difficult to make out but I can still see the last few letters apparently of the word "community", on both springs.  The pan is definitely Number 4 and wording on the pan is, "S Newhouse" then a couple/few letters that I can't make out.  Then, "Oneida Community". Thanks for the help!!
