45/70 loads for 300gr

I just purchased some Speer 300gr JHP and need load data using IMR 4198 or 3031.  My one caliber load book does not have a listing for the Speer 300gr.
Also, any pet loads for the Hornady 300gr HP using these powders would be appreciated.
I'm not looking for the hottest load just something accurate for use on deer size game only.
I have the 45/70 Handi rifle synthetic stock.

Their seems to be a big difference between the Speer and Hornady in max load and fps for the category II marlin level guns using IMR 4198.

Speer    300gr   IMR4198   43gr    1762fps
Hornady 300gr  IMR4198   48.7gr  2100fps

I wonder why such a difference?

Do you have anything on Nosler partitions?

Speer is probably using trapdoor SAAMI levels to 28kpsi, and Hornady's using 1895 lever gun levels to 40kcup would be my guess.

I use Hodgdon H4198 for 2400+fps with the 300gr NP, I started with the mid trapdoor loads and worked up using the 300gr data since the bearing surface of the NP is longer than the Sierra bullet. Data is from the 2004 Hodgdon Annual. Pic compliments of MattParliament.

Here are what the various loading manuals consider as maximum in Lever Action rifles:

Hornady = 40,000 cup
Speer = 28,000 cup
Lyman = 28,000 cup
Hodgdon = 40,000 cup
Accurate = 28,000 psi

Note that cup and psi are equal at 28,000.  Above and below that value, the two measuring units differ.

Thanks for the info. I knew the different category levels for 45/70 but did not know bullet/powder companies were using different max pressure ratings for load data. Speer is showing its ratings with PSI instead of CUP. It’s a little irritating to see the mix of cup and psi figures. I guess the real question is what is the 2005 Handi rifle rated at by the manufacturer for both max CUP and PSI? I looked on their site but could not find anything.

If you ask H&R what levels to load to, they'll tell you levergun. Buffalo Bore, Garrett and Corbon list the Handi for their +P loads. Several of us have shot low Ruger #1 loads in our 45-70s with no problems, but most shooters will find recoil more the limiting factor.

If you can figure out what Winchester uses in their Super-X 300gr JHP, you would be quite happy with the results.

My 22" 45-70 absolutely loves it.  I have it sighted for 2.5" high at 50yards, 100yrd zero by Winchester's info.   Cuts ragged holes with open sights.

Its one of my only (2) gun and ammo combo's that I can "feel" where the bullet is gonna hit because of its consistant grouping.  ...my other is my Colt Python and 125gr JHP's..

I'm new here to the forum and have been reading quite a bit of it. I have a 45/70 handi, as does my brother, and my brother in-law. We all shoot Remington 300gr hollow points over 50.0 gr Reloader 7, CCI200 primers, and Remington brass. We are getting low 1900 fps and 3 shot 100 yard groups you can cover with a quarter if we do our part. Needless to say I love my handi and will be getting other barrels.

Welcome aboard 45/70fan, sounds like a bunch more very satisfied 45-70 Handi owners!!! Can't say I've known or read of a 45-70 H&R/NEF rifle that didn't shoot good and looks like your family knows it too!! :wink:

Odd, Speer #13 shows it's Lever data in cup, not psi.  However, in this pressure range (28,000) cup = psi, so the differences in units don't matter.

:D , Welcome aboard 45/70fan, your lucky you got here now and avoided the last minute Christmas rush :-D  :-D . I, as Quick, and you and your family and friends am another very happy and satisfied H&R Handi 45-70 shooter. But I must warn you to be very careful, these fine guns are addicting!!! I just took a break from fitting a new (used) receiver to one of my extra barrels. Boy what fun!!, now to see if I can get to the range tomorrow afternoon...Merry Christmas and happy to have you with us....<><.... :grin:
