Found one at a gunstore for $245. Its in 45-70 with the 28" bbl and in excellent shape. Only real blemish is on the bottom of the foreend. Decent buy or not? :grin:

Sounds a bit high to me, too....someone else just bought one for $125 recently. I think it just depends on how much ya want it, they have great rifling in the bores, apparently are great shooters with trapdoor loads, but the frame can't be fitted with any barrels from the accessory barrel program.

i have one its the 24 inch carbine model they have cut riffling and are very accurate, and best thing is the collapsible cleaning road good if you get a stuck case but i have never had a stuck case in mine.had it over 25years sill like new ,i think the price is to high but depends on how bad you want it. if you wanted to hunt with it you would not be disappointed but as tim says trap door loads only.

This past year I've seen two in PA.

One at a gun shop for $200 with a 20.ga barrel and one at a gun show for $150. Both were in exellent condition.

I, too, believe the asking price is a bit high.

My feelings are, if it something you've wanted and feel you may not find another in the condition you describe, then buy it.

Given that its at a shop, you may ask if he can throw in a box of bullets. At $20.00 + for a box of .45-70 that would help the price down to a reasonable area.

Values are subjective. If you are a dealer and have to worry about making a profit, then that is one thing. But if you are a hobbyist, like most of us, the value to each will be different, depending on how much you want it for your personel use.

I've seen Skikaris sell between 200 and 250 several times. To me, this is a fair price for one in good condition. Especally when you consider the fact that you are getting a cut-rifled barrel. Even thought i have a BC, if I lost my Shikari I'd start looking for a replacement right away. When I head out shooting for fun or hunting, I alway seem to grab the Shikari. I like it's style, balance and low hammer. It may shoot only "Springfield" loads, but they do very well on deer. And I enjoy those loads more then the hot ones.

I'm even toying with the idea of cutting my BC back to 24 inches. I find the long tube very un-handy when hunting. Since I use smokeless loads, I do not need the long tube for ballistics, and since I scope everything now, i do not need the extended sight radius.

Now, if I could just find another Shikari stock set.

H&R Model 155, or "Shikari"
Mfg from 1972 until ?.
28 inch cut-rifled barrel.
Straight buttstock
Brass cleaning rod under barrel.
Low profile rebound hammer (no transfer bar)
Chambered in 45-70 and 44 Mag.
Case-hardened receiver. Since these were the Topper actions, use only factory or "Springfield" level loads.

You are welcome. With all my Handis, if I had to choose my favorite, it wold be my personalized Model 155 45-70 or my Model 158 30-30, even though they are both based on the old Topper actions. Have a good day. (Remember those lost at Pearl Harbor.)
