Tools for the field - Pack Frames
« on: December 03, 2005, 08:16:11 PM »
My current pack frame looks a lot like this one.  Although this might work too.  It is a Camptrails/Eureka Moose freighter

This is what I am going to try next.  The Kelty Freighter Frame.  I like the sides that you can wrap around the load.

I like the Camp Trails too

I have a Camp Trails frame too but without the shelf of the moose frame.  I keep a bag on mine, called the Camp Trails Wolf Pack.  I was just thinking while out trapping that its held up amazingly well - since about 1977.  It was -20 that day and the plastic buckles have never failed?  I've hauled quite a bit of caribou in my pack, and some deer.  Luckily all moose I've shot since I got the pack have dropped close to a boat and I've never had to give it the ultimate test.  I did carry a weighed 70 pounds in it for a week long bear hunt once - when I was in shape.

I added an extra back band to mine.  I really like the V frame at top, the frame doesn't bang the back of my head like some other brands.  You might want to check that on the Kelty before you buy Dave.

Lately I've been bushwhacking through alders  and the frame catches them a lot.  One of my hunting partners has an internal frame pack and he slides through alders better, can carry a lot of caribou but I doubt he could strap on a chunk of moose.

And with the pack bag, there are a lot of straps and other stuff that is noisy when hunting.  I've taped over holes and tied down a lot of loose ends to make it more quiet.

I sure can't complain about durability given the years of service its given me.
