I have a Rem 700 VS in 308 that I would like to use for recreational competition out to 1000yds. It is topped with a Elite 3200 4-12X40.
It is a tack driver at 100 yds.

Terry, the .308 really shines to 600 yds. This is with off the shelf match ammo. 1000yd accuracy demands more. The Palma Team is limited to a 155gr bullet. You are not. I would work up a load with at least a 172 gr. boattail hollowpoint.A Sierra 190 or 200gr. HPBT would be best.IMR3031, about 38.0 gr. is something to try. 39.5 gr. is max. DO NOT EXCEED THIS.If you don't have this powder try what you do have that has proven it's accuracy before . These big bullets have a high BC & will buck the wind better than anything else. IMR 4895 works well & is my fav.
Make sure every round is concentric. That is the bullet is straight out of the case.

It will consistently shoot sub MOA with anything I've tried and really likes the factory Rem Accutips 165 grn- always .4 inch or better. I also had a friend work up a handload of 165 grn and the best so far is a 5 shot group of .45 inch.
I've heard the 175 grn Matchkings are good.

Yes,the matchkings are very good. That is what I use at 600yds. with the M-1 Rifle. !68gr.HPBT. & 4895 of course. :-)
At 1000 yd. though you need a big bullet for the high BC. Just a puff of breeze is enough to push a light bullet off course. In particular in the last 2-300 yd. before impact.

Jose has it right I prefer a slower powder like RL15 maybe even 19 on the 190"s the bigest key on the long range is the spread between shots, a cronigraph is a real help to see if your load is doing what it should, borrow one or buy one for about $70.00 a maximum spread of 10 fps would be good even though they almost go thru the same hole at 100 dosen't mean there won't be some droped shots at 1000 look at the 2nd book by hornady that has velocity and bullet drop and you'll see what 50 fps can do. I've just started working out a mid-range load for my M1A tryed the RL15 with CCI BR2's weighed the cases got it down to 26fps spread but would like it a little closer Federal gold medal match does that out of the box.

GP,there are 2 things I can suggest to lower S.D.,& I can't swear they'll get it as low as you want,but they will help. Go to Federal Bench Rest Primers. They are more consistant. Check & see if you are puting any crimp on your bullet in the case. Wheather you are or are not , it has to be consistant,& that's the nature of our fun & the very air I breath when shooting NRA HI-POWER.

jose thanks for the tip. I have some federal 210 M's but they don't produce the results the BR-2's do. are they different from the bench rest primers? if so do you know where I could get a hundred to try? thanks

I'm not familar with BR-2 primers. The 210M is the benchrest primer. Fed may have come out with something new (BR-2) & I just haven't heard about it.
There is one other area: make sure all primer pockets are the same & the flash holes are all the same size.(dia.)
And all your brass has the same lot number , right??

jose the br-2's are by CCI I've noticed the federal's are hotter than cci's and produce more of a spread, I am deburing and uniforming my flash holes, and weighing my cases. the next step is neck turning , I might try the Lee factory crimp die I heard good input about it. I will get a neck size only die evenutaly but I'm probably splitting hairs working with the semi can't wait to get a good bolt gun

I've been turning cases inside & out for so long I forgot to mention it.Sorry about that.
A Mod.70 HBin .308 ought to fix you right up. :-) I had forgot you are using an M-1A. S.D. may not get any better til you get a bolt gun.I'm still using an M-1 rifle in 30-06 myself.With a 1950 Husky bolt-gun in 30-06 for hunting. I just really like that '06 I guess.

Either that or I'm too old & too prideful to change.
