I have found that moving about in this forum is working very slowly for me...Is this forum running extremely slow...or is it just my computer or something on my end ?

Not slow on my satellite connection even tho NOTHING is fast on it. But it beats dial up. :eek: Well OK most of the time it beats dial up. When it rains it dies. :cry:

I do have dial-up and that may be much of the problem..I may be wrong, but I appear to pick up spyware here in quantity.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised with that, being GBs is such a popular forum...lots of folks might to want to cash in on such a large body of subscribers..

In any case..I'm not bellyaching GB...you still have a great website !

I have a cable modem and even it is a bit slow on this site at times, however this morning it is lightning fast, so probably has something to do with number of people on the board. I never get any spyware of any kind. I run a firewall, spybot, adaware and of course road runner has its own blocking software.

It is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to pick up any spyware on this site UNLESS you happen to click on the links provided by posters. If you do that here or anywhere YOU WILL GET SPYWARE. Count on it.

There is NO SPYWARE, NO ADWARE and NO POP UPS on the GBO server. NONE. As long as I am the owner of this site there NEVER EVER will be. You have my promise on it. I hate that stuff with a passion and use the site daily. Most of my time online is spent here. So there is no way I'm letting the stuff in.

I personally will not click on links provided by others for the most part unless I recognize the site and know it clean.

As a for instance Geocities is full of trash. Click a link to any geocities site and you'll get a minimum of 2-3 pop ups and will have spyware added to your computer. Many others to include some of the photo hosting sites are the same.

BUT the junk didn't come from GBO it came from links posted by others.

The single biggest slow down on the GBO server are the search engine spider bots. We're so big and the way we're set up it takes them a long time to finish their job so they keep coming back to finish. If we have 2-3 of them on it's like having 200-300 folks using the site. That slows down any site.

I have cable and I find that this site is slow on occasion, especially in the mornings around 0630. I just assumed it was due to some routine maintenance programs running at that time.

By the way if when using the spell check feature you look up the definition of a word, to see if you are using the correct spelling, You will get a pop-up add.

I must admit I am not real sharp about internet workings (that's one reason I have a son...LOL)..
I sure didn't think that you would allow such a thing....I thought those guys could break in from "the outside", just trying to suck up on some of your site's great popularity.
Thanks for the tip on the links...probably where I was getting the tags put on..

Sometimes the programs you have running in the backround like scheduled tasks and automatic downloads can slow your computer down. I have also heard your firewall and anti-virus programs can slow your pc down.

No they can't do that. As long as you don't click any links other than those that are a part of the GBO site you can't pick up anything bad here. Click the links supplied in the posts in the forums and you're on your own. Nearly all of them have something that will be added to your computer.

I sure can't say that but it is slower than it has been at times in the past. I think the last software upgrade was a mistake. Not sure just why or how but it has seemed to slow us down. There is a new upgrade that will fix it but Matt needs to shut the site down for 24 hours (maybe it will take less) to set it up. He needs to delete the current software and upload the new version and then add back to it the specific mods we use. While doing it he will optimize the database also. I may also have him make a change that reduces the time the search engine spiderbots spend here. That is a major slow down factor that is kinda unique to us. But it's also why we rank so high in the search engines.
