What is the rule of thumb(or is there one) for bullet weight for specific twist in the .308 Winchester?

Somewhere in the 150-168 grain range. Can't narrow it closer than that. Some rifles have a decided preference. I'm inclined to favor the 165s for hunting purposes in rifles that like them.
It is the duty of the good citizen to love his country and hate his gubmint.

mag41vance:  I had one of those dang things - it was a Remington 788 in 308 and the darn thing came with a 30-06 twist.  Most 08s have a 1:12 twist, my 788 had a 1:10 twist.  It shot 150s and 165s very nicely but they caused a tremendous amount of meat damage.  My preferred load was a 180 gn Hornaday round nose that shot under 1" at 100m using 41 gn of IMR4895 for about 2480'/sec.  HTH.  Mikey.

A .308 caliber 1 in 10" twist barrel is best suited for bullets in the heavier weight range.  You will most likely get your best accuracy with bullets n the 180 to 220 gr. weight range.  I prefer a 1 in 12" twist myself.  Lawdog

I recently set up 2 .308 rifles for my nephew and brother in law. One was a Browning A bolt, the other a Remington 700. The A bolt has a 1-12" twist, the remington 1-10". The A bolt was shooting .75" groups with Factory 150gr Core-lokt, while the 700 would not group with the same ammo.
the Remington did group right at an inch with my reloads which were 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip over 46.5 gr Varget. (He took a 6 point with that load with excellent results)
