Which new barrel to buy??
« on: December 05, 2005, 04:35:13 PM »
Hi everyone,
I want to buy a good, long range caliber for my Encore.  I have the 209x50, 20ga, and .375H&H barrels, but I would like something smaller that could still be used for deer. pigs, and smaller game.  I have a .30-06 Remington, so it would have to be smaller than that.  Something small, fast, flat trajectory, accurate....

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.
Karl

Depends on your area. Here in Delaware the Wal-mart does not carry it, but the local gun shops do.  :D You can also order it on line.  :D

My son recently bought a 7mm-08 for his Encore and loves it, I hunt with a 308 on my encore and feel the same about it. Took a nice 8 point on Nov. 25th with the 308 with 150 remington core-lok, did a heck of a job and didn't seem to damage alot of meat. :sniper:

The .25-06 is also a good choice.  You can buy 70-80gr bullets for smaller game, and use 115-120gr bullets for deer and pigs.

the 25-06 is great for varmits with light bullets to elk with the heavier bullets (I think elk are little big for it but alot of kills for some with it) great flat shooting gun with plenty of factory ammo every where that sells ammo, good huntin..........

My next barrel will be a .308. I don't reload anymore so the .308 has more factory ammo available than most other calibers and is adequate for deer and black bear. You can also shoot cheapo FMJ ammo is you want to.

Used hunt deer with the 308. Now in my encore I sure like how my 7mm mag shoots.
Good luck

Well Redhawk, looks like I may go with the 7mm-08.  I've been reading everything I could find on the matter.  I had considered the .25-06, .270Win, .270WSM, or the 7mmWSM.  It seems that barrels are readily available in the standard rounds (.25-06, .270Win, 7mm-08), but I haven't seen any listed for the WSM rounds.  Guess they're too new and would have to be ordered from the T/C Custom Shop.

I'd like to thank you all for the advice and comments.

I don't think you will find any WSM rounds made in the Encore barrels. The chamber walls would be to thin and therefor unsafe. Give T/C a call or Fox Ridge and I am sure they will confirm that.

Virgin valley made a few barrels in WSM, but quit when they found out that these rounds put to much back pressure on the frame. The pressure would warp the frame if shot with normal loads that work in a bolt action gun. When I ordered my 270 barrel, this is what Steve from VV told me anyway. This is why I got my 270 Win. barrel instead of the 270wsm. The 270 win. does every thing that I need it to do, and more.

how about a 243
« Reply #13 on: December 12, 2005, 10:56:44 AM »
Just though I would put my 2 cents in.

243 can be loaded light for varmits and yet with a 90-100 gr bullet they are excellent deer rounds.

Factory ammo is everywhere and not that expensive.

I have to agree.  Buying another .30 cal or a necked down .30 cal (7mm-08) is not a big difference from the 30-06.  If you only had one barrel, the .25 would be ideal...but since you have anything larger than deer covered, go with the .243.  Great for deer...and much better for varmints than .25 and larger.

Hi Arrowheadtroutm,
Yeah, I have to agree.  Since I made the post concerning the 7mm-08, I had been looking at the .243.  A lot of my friends use a .243 and have nothing but good to say about it.  Just to have more diversity, I'll probably go with that one.  Thanks,
Karl
