FIRST Range session with AMERICAN PIONEER POWDER(AWESOME)!!!
« on: December 06, 2005, 04:38:58 AM »
Just returned from the range. This was the first time I have ever shot anything other than PYRODEX RS in any of my muzzleloaders. The first three shots measured 1 1/4" at 100 yards.  :-D   I swabbed the bore and made the appropriate sight adjustment, and right in the bullseye the next shot went.
I am useing a 209X45 ENCORE S/S with MILLET RINGS and 2X7 NIKON.
My load was 100gr of APP FFG, 225gr POWERBELT &  KLEANBORE 209s
I haven't cleaned it yet but im sure it will be a piece of cake. Now to sight in my KNIGHT 50 cal with APP.

I just cleaned my 209X45. Dang was it easy! I ran a clean wet patch down the bore, four complete times. Then ran another clean wet patch down just to verify all the fouling was removed. The patch came out clean. Dried the bore with two dry patches, then ran a patch saturated with KNIGHT SOLVENT CONCENTRATE down the bore just to make sure. No fowling whatsoever! :-D  Then dried with two more dri patches. In the morning im heading back to the range to sight in my KNIGHT 50 cal.
I like this AMERICAN PIONEER POWDER so much that im going to give the two lbs of PYRODEX RS to my BEST/WORST friend. HAH!!!!!!

OH yea! BP season opens Fri morning here in EAST TN. I know where there there is a nice fat 4 point.  Looks like a good opportunity to test the 225gr POWER BELTS. Suppose to have cold temps and light snow flurries.  :-D

I can`t wait to try the APP in my NEF Sidekick!! sounds like good stuff. I am a true Black shooter, but in an inline gun, I wouldn`t feel so guilty :) Jack.

MAN after shooting this AMERICAN PIONEER POWDER it can't get much better unless you use the SAVAGE inline that burns smokeless powder. I was pretty skeptical and figured this APP was a sales gimick. I am a true believer now! NO MORE PYRODEX WILL BE FIRED IN MY INLINES!!!!!!
I would have used JIM SHOCKEYS GOLD but couldn't find it in my area! It might be even better!!!

This APP works just as well in my KNIGHT 50 cal too. I was at the range first thing this morning. Heavy frost about 20 degrees. Loaded 90gr of APP FFG and a 200gr SHOCKWAVE and musket cap. I had to do a little scope adjusting, but my last three shots were in the bulls eye at 100 yards. Im letting my youngest daughter use it this weekend and ill be carrying the ENCORE. :-D

Sounds like great stuff!! I am going to try to track down a bottle of APP FFG and some Shockeys Gold. Is SG FFG? Jack.

I sure like the AP FFG, very clean, accurate, shot 7 times without cleaning, still easy to reload my 345 Powerbelts. I use 3 777 pellets in the field just for a fast 2nd shot.....

The powder is same as Clean Shot which was on the market for a couple of years. I like it very much. One problem I noticed is that the residue is very hydroscopic and will cause corrosion very quickly if your gun is not cleaned after a shooting session i.e. do not put off cleaning a few days after shooting it.

I have been using American Pioneer (and it's previously named propellent, clean shot) for 5 years.  Have had nothing but good accuracy and good luck with it.  So much easier to clean than 777 or Pyrodex.

I have never noticed any corrosion problems.  In fact I know someone who used it last year and never cleaned their rifle until 8 months later . . . no corrosion what so ever.  Yep I confess . . . it was me.  What a bone head!  But no problems at all.  Ran a few wet patches thru it and the bore is perfect.

Note:  Goex clean shot is not American Pioneer.

Today, I shot for a while using the new primers by Remington.  They work great with 2/50 gn pellets and a 295 Powerbelt.

Is the Shockey`s Gold FFG or FFFG? What tempature is the minimum to set this stuff off? I know Black is the lowest to get to ignite. Thanks-Jack.

:D I bought a pound container of American Pioneer Powder this summer after talking to the Company reps at a D U convention. I got around to trying it in a TC Hawken rifle that I had bought used. Powder seemed to shoot  OK. Cleaned up very easy. I had some trouble with misfires with the #11 caps. Do I need a hotter ignition? I used FFG. It seemed awful coarse. It certainly seems far superior to pyrodex. The misfires mean I'll use a different setup for hunting till I experiment a bit more.

American Pioneer is/was Clean Shot. The Goex stuff is called Clear Shot. I always forget which is which and have to go look at the cans on the shelf.

AP is non corrosive. On their web sight someone is trying to go 10,000 shots without cleaning.

I haven't tried the AP in a sidelock yet, but it works great in revolvers and my RemingtonML700.

Are you folks using the AP powder removing any residual oil from the bore before use?  When I store my ML's I usually run a patch with Rem-oil (or another gun oil) thru them, sometimes I remove the oil with alcohol prior to shooting but sometimes I don't.  I tried 3f AP about a month a go in 2 of my in-lines.  Accuracy was so-so and clean-up was a bear.  I scrubbed my 45 cal for 45 min to remove a white residue that resembled crisco.  I normally shoot pistol pyrodex in these two rifles and clean up is much faster.  With all the press about how easy AP cleans up I figured there must have been some kind of reaction with the residual oil I left in the bore.  I was about to give away the rest of the can but I guess I'll try it again with an oil free bore.

Have you guys increased your volumetric powder charge using AP?  I noticed the granulation is much larger than any other powder I've used and recoil is much more mild when compared volume to volume of pyrodex.

oneshotonekill---the white residue that resembles Crisco is residue after firing that has absorbed moisture and if left in a gun is very definitely corrosive. If the gun is cleaned soon after firing I found that it cleaned up easily. However if left for any time is a bear to clean. Personally I woud not use this powder in any sidelock gun unless you could remove the breech plug for cleaning.

Scratch---The time between shooting and cleaning those guns was about 2 hours and it was a very dry day so I don't know how much moisture could have been absorbed.  I figured if anything there may have been some oil left in the bore that bonded to the residue from the AP powder.  All I can say is water and waterbased solvents would not remove the residue, I had to use Butch's bore shine (standard version) and a bronze brush to get it out of the barrel.  In the adds they state plain water will remove the residue so I figured some type of reaction with oil must have occured.  I also noticed a white/gray residue on everything just from the unburnt powder.

I had exactly the same experience with AP. Will never use it again. I have never had so much trouble cleaning a muzzle loader in my life. It really made a crusty gunky mess in my Omega. I gave away the rest of the pound bottle that I had.

Well-well, this is very interesting. I thought this stuff was the cleanest shooting black substitute. Jack.

I put in my post above that I had not tried AP in a sidelock gun, but I forgot about shooting my 32 caliber with it.

32s foul very easy, but not with the AP. I fired at least 30 shots without cleaning or loss of accuracy.  AP says not to use lubes or cleanup will be harder. When shooing my 32 I used spit patches for the first shot or two and then used the patches dry. I did not have any problems seating the ball or with cleanup.
