I do agree with you to a certain point.     The manufactures are building rifles that will exceed the 1,000 fps. mark(mostly in PCP rifles but a number of springers do reach or very nearly reach that "magical" number).  True in many applications all that speed isn’t needed but that are times it does come in handy.  One time is when hunting larger small game(like Turkeys for example) where using a .rimfire isn’t an option.  I personally don’t like chewing around the birdshot either.  The same goes for controlling larger pests(like Fox, Raccoons, etc.).  So a powerful air rifle is the answer.  My belief is you are going to see more powerful air rifles being introduced over time.  If you want the truth about velocity data then make the manufactures state and back velocity claims with real life data and not what they can achieve with special pellets(light weight non-lead types).  Lawdog
