Glock 17 shoots low
« on: December 06, 2005, 10:47:05 AM »
I've had my 17 for 7 years now and haven't fired it for about 3. (The Glock stays at home by the bed while I shoot pistol league with other weapons.) I pulled the 17 out at the range and to my dismay it was shooting extremely low. ( 12 inches below point of aim at 10 yds.) I don't remember this gun shooting that low before. I've since added a Glock factory rear adjustable sight and with it cranked all the up it's still shooting 4 inches low at 10 yds. I don't know of any common Glock problems that would account for this, anyone else have any ideas?

Are you still using the factory front sight? Don't know why you put an adjustable sight on you nightstand gun, but the Glock adjustable sight would be my last choice. I would suggest you invest less than $100 for a good set of night sights. I can't think of anything in a Glock internally that could cause you this problem, expecially one that has been used so little. If you're set on keeping the sight you have, you can get shorter front sights from Glock to bring your POI up a bit.
Good Luck!

The Glock adjustable was a cheap experiment to see if the problem could be eliminated with a sight change. I really didn't want to install (spend the $$$) for night sights, crank them up all the way, and still have it shooting that low. I was also considering changing the barrel. (Maybe to something without polygonal rifling to shoot cast bullets.) Just wanted to try and be sure I wasn't missing or overlooking anything before resorting to other measures to raise the POI. Thanks for the response.

Rather than using the Glock sights, I would reccomend using sights from any reliable manufacturer. Bottom line: get away from the Glock sights! Night sights, straight eights, whatever---------get some decent sights! For a home defense gun the night sights make sense to me.

Still thinking about this--------could it be that someone, perhaps at the factory put the taller front sight on your 17? You might want to measure it and check it against the specs to see. Glock has front sights of varying heights if this is true.

That could be possible. This gun is a reconditioned police trade in. (It must have been carried by a chief or other high ranking person. It showed absolutely no wear at all.) I also did a search on Glock Talk and found some archive threads saying that Glocks are designed to hold the front sight on the bull, and that a 6 o'clock hold on the bull will result in seriously low POI. Next trip to the range I'll try dead on the bull.

I have found that after a while of not shooting a Glock, I have a problem with shooting low also.  I found that at least for me it was that I was "milking" the grip.  Once I readjusted my grip again, the shooting got a lot better.  Another thing is if you for some reason are anticipating the recoil.  I don't think that is the problem since you shoot other pistols all the time, but it is a thought.  I shoot a 10MM glock. G20.

I wouldn't do anything with it until you have another good pistol shooter, preferably a Glock user, shoot it.  Eliminate the 'human factor' before you make any mechanical changes.
