I used to read the magazine.  I never subscribed, just bought it off the shelf--some mailing lists I prefer to not be found on.  Anyway, they went out of print a number of years ago.  I never have found anything comparable to it.  I'm not sure why they didn't stay afloat unless the target audience of folks who care about preparedness is just to small.  Anyway, what magazines or internet groups to find most informative/useful.

Hello Chaplain Robert,
Jim Benson has said, that the ASG people, wanted to get more "politically correct".
Presume, the toning down of guns.(Don't know about this)
But, Jim Benson does have about the same as ASG.And is not P.C.

ASG turned into Self Reliance Journal when they were fighting to keep their heads above the water. They got too goody-goody for their target audience. Plus, the non-event of Y2K didn't help their situation. For a while Backwoods Home magazine bought the remaining ASG subscription list and finished off everybody's subscription with Backwoods Home at a cost to them. They got a lot of old ASG subscribers, even if it isn't exactly ASG.

There were some of these primitive living skills magazines that used to advertise in ASG that might still be around. I have back issues of ASG from Jan 1, 2000 to whenever they finally went under, I'll give them a check.

I really like this magazine The Backwoodsman. It is sort of a utilitarian, primitive, modern mountain man type publication that releases six issues per year. It isn't officially a survivalist magazine, but has a lot of interesting articles. Some topics I remember are; making a permanent rural dwelling from an old travel trailer, sporterizing or reconditioning surplus rifles, reloading blackpowder cartridges, making cap lock firearms from scratch, tanning buckskin, equipping an old pickup for rugged backwoods travel, even some historical articles about living history groups.

I used to be very paranoid. I was like a The End Of The World As We Know It minded survivalist. There is a forum called Frugal Squirrel's which is sort of a hardcore TEOTWAWKI minded place. I started to get burned out on that whole mindset though. There are a lot of Armchair Survivalists who post messages there concerning which AR15 variant would be the best to cache out in the woods with a supply of MREs. That is Definately not my thing.
If God wanted plastic stocks he would have made plastic trees.

Hi willysjeep134 :D ,
That is interesting. Jim Benson told me that ASG was getting too P.C.
I have some issues from before 2000.
Still read them. Not often.Still some good articles.
I was trying to find one article. It was a "Survivor's Story".
Was about 2 guys went hunting in South Texas.Borrowed some firewood from a camp aways from theirs. And then, things got interesting that night.
They slept in their truck, awakened to some chanting, and a huge bonfire.
2 were trying to sneak up to them.Got out of the truck, and used nightvision to see who was comming, after they hid in the woods/brush.
The author thinks it was satan worshippers. And figured, they were going to be the sacrafice.
I looked and looked for this article.Have it somewhere.
Told Jim Benson about the article. And said that now,I have nightvision.
Would like to get another subscription to Jim's mag.
First, have to pay off my C.C.'s.
See ya later.
