Anyone shooting the 300 RUM?
« on: March 07, 2003, 05:07:57 PM »
Just bought a NIB Winchester M70 Classic in 300 Remington Ultra Mag, blued action and synthetic stock for $389. Was a Davidson's special purchase from Win, not in the Win catalog. Looks nice and was below what Davidson's was wholesaling it to dealers for. Don't know if I'll keep it or trade it off for a WSM. Any thoughts from you guys shooting this round?

I love my Ultra-Mag. With the proper load, there isnt anythything that it will no do.  It can fire reduced loads with heavy bullets and XMP 5744 for close work on deer, or 180-200 gr. for Elk and Bears, 165 and 150 gr Nosler Balistic tips for some real reach-out-and-touch.

helobill,

The 300 RUM does get right with it in the recoil department but it is not unmanageable. In a correctly fitted stock it can be a terrific tool for all sorts of uses. I have barrels in various twist rates and lengths for specific uses. It is a very versatile cartridge and relatively easy to load for.

Regards.

Sounds like I just might keep it. The naysayers were telling me it would be short lived because no one liked it. At least they'll be two other guys shooting it besides me.

It is really weird to shoot an ELK or a Bear, and they take a while to realize something has happened.  The time delay for a reaction is very strange.

I just love my 300 ultra mag  I use 180 grain scirrocos in mine thinking about trying 180 grain noslers everyone I hunt with says I'm crazy for using  something that big for whitetails but I tell them  "DEAD IS DEAD" recoil ain't that bad for the performance you get  I think I can hunt just about anything in North America with my 300 ultra mag
