Im about this || close to buying a boat.   :grin:

My payment will probably be about a bolt action gun a month, thats 2 handis a month for this forum.   :shock:


Boy guns and shooting are cheap in comparison, but my wife is equally guilty in the boating purchases, maybe even the leader in that craziness.  She talked me out of every lower cost alternative I could find, but she know best.

I'd rather have the guns. Boats are nice, but I can always find a use for a good rifle. Not to mention I don't need water to enjoy it. Lot easier to clean. Small and compact. They all fit in my house.

Boats are important IF you use them enough!! I bought a new/used boat 2yrs ago, I've used it a fair amount during the spring and summer, mostly in the spring for spring chinook and a little smalley fishing, but it just sits in the garage the rest of the year....something to consider. :wink:

yea, Im buying a 3 year old boat with 50 hours on it

our current boat, we put 100 hrs a year for the first 3 years, now its about 7 seasons on it with almost 600 hrs.  So we use it.

Well I am not buying boat yet, but I spent all fall getting things ready to move in on a farm I bought and things been a little tight because I haven't sold my other house yet so we have two mortgage payments.....

Still going to get another handi though  :-D

I use my 1973 17` Boston Whaler alot form March until the end of October in Lake Erie. Steelhead Fishing is outstanding these days!! I am also a Classic Boston Whaler Boat nut :grin: I do have my share of guns though :) Jack.

Hey I use my 19' Jon boat to hunt with in the winter,or else walk and swim about 3 miles.If you see me in the boat,you can rest assured that there's a Handi or 2 in the boat also.After it get's to dark to hunt you can always run some juglines on the way back. :grin:  :grin: Digger

The reason I buy HR/NEF is because I get a lot for my money.  I dont buy 300-500 dollar scopes, because I dont see the extra value for my money.  I make my own bullets using Lee equipment with 12-17 dollars per 100 pills(no Nosler, Barnes, Swift etc), and I do these types of "efficiencies" in every aspect of my life.  I cut corners when the corners provide little benefit compared to their cost.  Certainly, if the corners are important, they are not cut, but many people believe you have to buy the best of everything you buy, or more appropriately, the most expensive of everything you buy.  If I did that, I would not be able to dabble in as many things as I dabble.  If I trimmed back to less interest, I could spent more on those items certainly, but I like my variety.  Sure, it would be nice to have a Sharps replica from Shilo, but my Buffalo Classic quenches my thirst just fine.  But, if it were extremely important, I could have afforded myself the Shilo - bottom line is, I chose the BC.  Frugalness is not alway silliness.  
 
I just keep my mouth humbly shut as much as I can when someone insists that others must spend and save for the higher price options at every junction in life.  Just because one Trasco scope broke is not proof positive that every later Tasco scope will suffer the same early demise.

I happen to have both....lots of guns AND a quite fast (70+mph) 17' HydroStream Vector boat (and Jet Skis, a lake cottage, and several other costly hobbies such as Online and Casino Poker, R/C aircraft, High-Power Model Rocketry, vintage arcade/pinball games, mucho reloading equipment, etc.)
My motto in life is: "The one who dies with the most toys WINS" and I live by it. That being said, you do not seem to be set on owning a boat....boats can be a MAJOR committment, and it is very true that they are " A Large Hole in the Water that One throws money into" as well as "Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go" goes 4x for a boat.

As it seems that your WIFE is the one that will not be satisfied with anything other than a boat & you seem to be on the fence, I suggest you tell her that SHE has to pay for the boat with money that SHE earns. If she truly wants the boat, she should have no qualms about paying for it.
That way you can still get your guns & enjoy the boat, to boot !

If you do not either have property on a lake, or extremely easy lake access a boat may be a waste of money; if you think a car depreciates in value, you ain't seen nuttin' yet !

I understand your plight, but in my case it's motorcycles. I bought two new bikes this year to add to the two I already had, but the little lady is all for it. She loves riding bikes and doesn't shoot so this way we have things to do together and I still get plenty of tiome at the range with my friends. It's all fun, buy what you want and enjoy the thing as much as you can.

No, I am the boat nut and the gun nut.  I got 2-ft-idus a month after we splashed our first boat.  My wife developed 10-ft-idus eventually.  We compromised, 3 foot upgrade.

Speed is expensive, my first salesman said "this is how fast the boat goes, if you want to go 5 mph faster, give me 10 grand, want another 5 mph - another 10 grand, and so on and so on"

I just hope to continue on the gun a year program.  I think I could sneek a handi barrel in under the radar but if I have to get the entire gun, it may take some soul searching.  I gained a gun and 2 barrels last year.  Maybe a trade would allow me to sleep better  :-D
