.308 OR 270?
« on: December 09, 2005, 11:01:44 AM »
I hate to bring it up (probably all ready has been brought up).  270 or 308.  I currently hunt with a 308, no complaints.  However, I came across a used Rem. 700 (nice wood stock w/ simmons scope) for around $375.  The rifle is in 270.  I need good argument to make to purchase this rifle.  Does the 270 do anything better then the 308, or is the 308 better.  I do not reload, so I use factory ammo.  Any help? :?

:D I picked the .270 because the .270 kills deer like lightning. They shoot a little flatter than a .308. Factory ammo is more custom tailored for the .270. The .308 bullets are made to work well with MANY different calibers. (a few examples .308-.30-06-300 Savage - .300 Win mag.- .300 Ultra mag) thats a wide spectrum of velocities there.
But guess what the .308 is a great round to so in all reality you don't need a .270. I'm just trying to talk you into it.
Hey one is a long action and one is a short thats enough of an argument to buy one.

I also picked the 270 for the lightning like kills it has given me on deer and antelope. maybe that is why I have two of them and a new 270WSM.
While the 308 is a very good cartridge and I did own a winchester model 100 in said caliber (Now there is a gone I wish I did not sell) for me it has always been either a little to much gun or not quite enough.

Since you already have a 308 you need a change of pace.  Go with the 270, but put some good glass on it.

For normal big game hunting, at normal ranges, I'll bet you can use one on odd days, and the other on even days, and never notice any difference.

Get the .270, and use it. After a little while you'll wonder why you ever bought a .308.  :D

I own both, I use them usually for different things. The 270 goes Mule deer and antelope hunting generally but I used it elk hunting the last two years.  The 308 is my whitetail and feral hog rifle except this year I shot a nice whitetail with my 30-06. Just buy a rifle inf each of the most common cartridges that way the problem become deciding which rifles to take hunting.

Like Redhawk, I believe that you need to add to your battery.

To me, this is like saying do I need a Truck to go along with my Car. They
are totally different. The 308 is a great short to medium range rifle, it can
be & is used for long range hunting & target work ( & Sniping) , the key
there is for long range is a gun built for that purpose, most 308's are not
& because of the trajectory, the range calculations have to be more precise.

The 270 is a better long range Deer & Antelope cartridge.

I gotta be honest....308 & 270 bore me.
But I'm mystified? :|
You need a reason to buy another gun?!
O.k., 270 Win is probably the most singular calibre devoted cartridge.
Every popularly available bullet made for 270 cal was made for the 270 Win and most of the unusual ones too.
If you can't get a good factory load for a 270 you're not looking hard enough.
And if that isn't enough reason you need it because stroking it will make you feel better....... :)  :D

To be honest I have not purchased the 270 yet, YET.  The rifle will be sitting there when I get ready, I am going to finish off this deer season with the 308.  Also the longer it sits in this little sporting goods store the lower in price he will offer it to me (the store has been going out of business for the past 3 years that I have been a polie officer here and he only opens up for 30 minutes to an hour each day) I will probably pick it up for $200 to $250.
However, I see that there are a LOT of 270 followers out there, but ballistically the 270 does not do anything better than the 308 (let the flames begin).  My 308 is zerod for 175 yards (and 25 yards based on trajectory), that put me at an 1.4 inchs high at 100 yards and an 1.2 inchs low at 200 yards (as a rule I won't shoot deer over 200 yards, better to stalk and get closer). Which is very acceptable for a hunting rifle.  So the only reason to get the 270 is to add another rifle to my inventory. :)

I my dad uses the 270 for mulies, barbary sheep, and antelope. With a flatter trajectory than the 308 it is better for long ranges. Depending on the kind of hunting you do i say get the 270.

JKump,

If your shoots are in the range of 200 yards, 308 or 270 will get the job done, I mean people here are telling you how well the 270 is (and I totally agree with them) but Im sure everyone here will also agree with me on how well and accurate the 308 is esspecially for shots under 200 yards

Honestly, 308 or 270, both are good, both are nice and accurate, but sometimes you might want something that can "push you back" when you pull the trigger......My point is, if you want an excuse to get a new rifle, get a "boomer".....something like..... 7mm mag (which by the way is another classic long range round)

Before you go and buy that rifle for $300+(I think its used right), check out the walmart prices, they sell guns at the cheapest prices ever.  I belive the mosberg ATR (new rifle for mosberg) comes in .270 or 30-06 , only 244$, and If you ask the manager of the sporting goods department to give you the one on display, he will do so with a 10% dicount (bringing it to 225$)  I would know this becuase I do that all the time

I agree.  When they say flatter shooting, we are talking past 300 yds, True?  None of my shots are that long.

If you like the platform, get it.  We all need another rifle!  ;)

I have both as well. Each obviously has its own advantages and for my rifles in these 2 calibers I break it down like this...

270win - This is my go to when I do more walking around as this rifle (rem 700 bdl) is quite a bit lighter than my 308, more accurate, and less recoil. I have always shot 130gr bullets out of it with 44gr of IMR4064.

308win - This is my go to when I'm out chasing hogs since I can cycle rounds through the thing pretty fast and nail 3-4 hogs running out in each group. The downsides of this round in my rifle (howa 1500) are that it is a fairly heavy rifle, accuracy isn't as good as the 270 and recoil is fairly stiff.  BTW I load 150gr bullets with 45.5gr of IMR4064.

Soooo basically it all boils down to what your going to use the rifle for. If its long range and your up against windy conditions more than not I would stay with the 308 and 165gr bullets. If you are hunting there is ahigh possibility that you want to get off more than one shot really quick then the short action 308 is what im going with. If im feeder hunting then a long action 270 would work just as well.

JKump –

If your shots are mostly around 200 yards the .270 won’t offer any real advantage.  Good cartridge, though, and a new rifle is always nice to have.  I just got my first Remington centerfire rifle for Christmas, a used 1975 BDL in .308Win.  When it comes to hunting it won’t do anything I can’t do as well or better with my 7mm or .300 magnum rifles, but that’s OK – I bought the .308 primarily to topple the 500-meter steel rams at the NRA Whittington Center about 3 hours south of here.  They don’t allow magnums on the silhouette range so the .308 is perfect for that job.

If the .270 tickles your fancy, jump on it.  For sheer fun, though, you might consider a levergun in .30-30.  Ammo is pretty inexpensive and leverguns beat bolts hands down in the fun department.  I use my Marlins (.30-30, .375win and .45-70) to plink clay pigeons at 200 yards and the .375Win and .45-70 have both toppled the steel rams at Whittington Center. (They just need 10 feet of holdover at that range).  My Marlins are all scoped using Warne Quick Detach rings so I can use the iron sights it I choose – and I often do.   Zeroed for Maximum Point Blank Range for a 6” diameter target (3” maximum rise or fall), all my Marlins have a MPBR over 200 yards. Using the .30-30 and factory Winchester 170g Power Points, aiming at the top edge of a clay pigeon 200-yards away will guarantee a hit. The new Hornady LeverEvolution ammo for the .30-30 makes it effective out to 250 yard or more.  Two years ago I blooded the .45-70, taking a mulie buck at 192 lasered yards and a 6x6 bull elk at 213 lasered yards.  The point is you can forget any notion you may have that a levergun is only good to 100-yards.

Just a thought.

Let's add one more spin on things.  Here in Middle Georgia we have a LOT of hogs, so if a hog come up, around here it gets shot.  One frind this year has shot eight hogs and 12 deer this deer season.
I see most people post that the 308 is their hog gun, so how is the 270 on pigs?  The 308 with heavy bullets should perform better.
So my rifle in this case should be the 308 because of the dual duty of shooting both deer and hogs.  The only I brought up the 270 is I found one that I might be able to pick up fairly cheap.  Also I need really good ammo to justify the purchase with the wife.

I wouldn't do it if i was you, stick with your 308, and if you REALLY want a new rifle, research for something that you "never thought" you could ever have......something like a 338 win / 375 h&h, 7mm mag (something that is different from the 308)...

the 270 is a nice round, but hunts under 200 yards and going after pigs.... maybe 308 is a better round for your situation.....Plus I think factory rounds for 308 are cheaper than 270.

Oh, and 1 more thing, $375 for a used rifle with a simmons scope ? I dunno man, does not sound like a "hell of a deal" to me....  I always buy my rifles brand new, that way I KNOW EXACTLY under what conditions they are in..... Used rifles, you never know how they were being taken care off....
I dunno about you guys, but used rifles are not appealing to me

I'd just stick to the .308, buy surplus rounds and shoot a whole lot. I love my .338 wm but I'm envious of my buddies low cost shooting without having to reload.

I think if you were going to add to the stable, it should be in a different category than the gun you already have or you might start picking a favorite. .450 marlin or 45-70 would make a nice hog gun.

Now that you mentioned it, I also thought about going bigger, perhaps one of the new Handi's in 35 whelen.  I like the 308 for hunting (was using a 243 with no problems, I wanted a little more power), like I said just came acrossed this 270.
