45-70 questions

Is the same action used on the 1895 Cowboy rifle and the 1895 Classic and Guide guns?  Are the Butt stocks interchangeable among the different models of 45-70 rifles?  Which model is the best shooter?

Does Marlin make a 30-30 with Ballard type rifling?

Cookie -

Yes and no.

Not to my knowledge.

The 1895's are available with straight and pistol grips, depending on the specific model.  The receivers are basically the same except for the grip tangs which are curevd for the pistol grips.   Straight grip stocks are interchangeable with straight grip, pistol grip with pistol grip, between the .45-70, 450, .444 and older .375Win and .356Win.  Haven't thecked my .30-30 but I expect it is more of the same.

As to a Ballard .30-30, not unless they do it in the Cowboy or MLR.  Could be wrong on that, though.

You can switch from straight stock to pistol grip stock and vice versa.  You just have to replace the Trigger Guard Plate, and Lever as well.

Check out this thread over on MarlinOwners.com which explains how to do it.

I want a 45-70 Cowboy (26" Barrel) with a pistol grip stock and am either going to pick up a 1895 S and have Marlin do the Cowboy conversion OR pick up a Cowboy and switch out the straight stock for a pistol grip stock.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, firstshot.
Did I miss it on the Marlin site?  I didn't see a 30/30 offered with a straight stock.  That's why I asked the stock question.  Also, is 20" the longest barrel you can get in a 30/30?  Is that because there is not much benefit to having a longer barrel on a 30/30 or just because there is not enough demand for it?

You're right, no 30/30 with a straight stock and max 30/30 barrel length is 20" and they are only offered with micro-groove rifling.   You could switch to a straight stock as described in the link above.  I'm not sure why they only offer a 20" barrel in the 30/30 and only with micro-groove rifling.  I would think that the micro-groove rifling would lend itself more to the use of jacketed bullets as opposed to cast bullets.  Maybe someone else on the forum has some ideas as to the reasoning.

What (deer, bear, ?) and in what kind of terrain (woods, fields?) will you be hunting?  Do you have other rifles for hunting? Could make a difference which caliber to choose.
