measurer question
« on: December 10, 2005, 04:40:17 AM »
I was gifted with a little measuring device that I need help with. It is a gold colored cylinder that is graduated . By pulling out the tube you can measure more powder. I think it starts at 50grs, how many grains is each click when you pull out the tube???

Also, does black powder measure [weigh] the same as reloading powder. I can check this measurer by my scales if so. If I set the rcbs scale at 80 grs and measure the 777, will it be 80 grs by weight?? Stupid question, I know!!!

The metal is probably brass as powder measurers are of a non-sparking material.  Usually,this type of measure is set for ten grain incraments of blackpowder
Other powders are measured by volume in the same device.  So if someone says 90 grains of 777, they are actually saying that it is the amount of 777 that will fit in 90 grains of space in a blackpowder measure.

If you want to be sure about the incraments, use 2f blackpowder instead of 777.

If this measurer is about the diameter of ones little finger, then yes it starts at 50 grains with 10 grain increments. They do however make them in the diameter of a pencil also for smaller guns. They are for BLACK POWDER ONLY.

No to Measure,,Yes to weight; Please Read;

Dry powders are weighed by "Avoirdupois Weight".  There are 7000 grains per pound. The opposing weights of measure using "grains" are the "Troy Weight" and the "Apothocaries Weight" each using 5,760 grains per pound.(K?)
 Now,,the standard set to "Volume" measures was, I believe set back in the late 1850's-1860, using at the time, available 2f grade black powder. The stuff was purty much made the same and widley available,,I think they called it the Civil war era.

 If you look at the modern propelants,, it will say ""Equivilant too" XX amount by volume black powder."" So if you pour 80 grians by volume of 2f BP on a scale it should say 80 grns. Because t7's say's it's 15% better than BP,,80 grns of t7's 2f by volume should tip the scale at 92grns,,  :-D , get it :?

((p.s.) I do use a "custom" made antler tip volume measure. I think my friend "Doc" made it to 65 grains,,after I filed and whittled,,it'll toss just under 80 grains weight of my powder to my .54)

I believe you have your conversion backward.  It should tip the scale at about 68-70 grains.
Thanks,

I thought that those powder measurers that started at 50 grains and went in 5 grain increments up to 100 gr or 110 grains.

Two bears, I don't believe so, to have 5 grain increments they would have to have 10 notches to get to 100 grains. Also thank you kindly for the moose receipes, going to make some. Rick
