H&R Ultra vs NEF Handi rifle

Are there as many inherent problems with the Ulta vs. Handi?  Specifically I am thinking about buying my son an Ultra Hunter in .30-06.  He has a tracker II that I bought him when he was 10 and he has killed 14 deer with it.  I know he likes single shots, and was thinking the ultra might be the better choice, or is it that the bluing is just better and it has a lam. stock?  We are going on a big hunting trip in 07, and I thought the ultra with a good leupold scope should set him up nicely.

I am not new to Handis, having owned a couple.  The .30-30 I had was sweet, the only thing I did to it was the O ring trick.  The other handi was a POS!  That is why I am asking about the ultra.  Thanks.

The difference between the Ultra and regular Handi is pretty much just cosmetic.  But if money is not an issue the fancier Ultra would be a more prized possession in my opinion.

Like all mass-produced products, there will be the occasional lemon that gets past quality control and out to the consumer.  

Since your trip is in '07 you have lots of time to get the one you want in the caliber of your choice and wring it out for loads/optics/accuracy/etc.

The great thing about NEF is that their customer service is top-notch.  They will make any defect right, within their specs., of course.

The laminated stock on the ultras is a step up in looks as well as quality.

What calibers are you considering?

What game is on the agenda?

The 30-06 would make a fine gift for him..and I like the accuracy I got out of mine with the Federal Fusion ammo..Go for the Ultra..it has the better laminated stocks on it that I like..over the plain pallet wood...

I've never noticed anything internally different tween em, the finish is nicer on the Ultra barrels and obviously the stocks are different. While some Handis have been described as "POS", I've not experienced any like that and with 25 rifle barrels and 14 frames, you'd think I might have if they were very common. If you happen to get one that's not up to par, H&R is more than willing to make it right, they have top notch CS and will bend over backwards to see that a customer is happy. I've got a 30-06 UltraComp that shoots real good, less than moa if I do might part well....As with any rifle, pick the right ammo and yours will too! :wink:



Mac has a great shooting UltraComp, too....

The trip is to South Africa for a plains game hunt.  A 30-06 should be a great choice for him.  We don't handload so it will factory loads.  I will try nosler/part., and Trophy Bonded Bearclaws, 180 gr. Federals.

Game on the list is kudu, gemsbok, zebra, impala, wildebeast, and warthog.  I am told most shots would be 50-150 yds. with the occasional 200 yd. shot.  I figured an 06, should the job.  My son doesn't shoot a lot, and I didn't want to get him a caliber he couldn't handle, plus I can buy several boxes of conventional loads for him to practice off hand with, and get some ground hog shooting in with me.  Also, the rifle won't be so expensive that we both would cry if anything happened to it on the trip.  I'll probably order him one after the 1st of the year.
