Ultra .223 Range Report ( Update )

Could not get it to group consistantly.
Had a couple of nice groups, .25" - .5" and .75"
But mostley they were flying in the 1.5" area
I fired a total of around 100 rd.
I tried resting at the front of the forearm then back in the middle
then by the hinge pin. Nothing gave me consistant groups.
I tried several differant loads, Factory and My special Home Recipe's with
differant bullet weight's. All to no Avail  
I did find that the forerm had some pressure points so I have releived them and will install a rubber bushing to free Float and then back to the Range. The crown looks fine.
The last Ultra .223 I had shot great, usually .6" and better.
If no Improvment it goes back to the Factory.

UPDATE:
I made some steel shims between barrel and receiver.
These could be alittle tighter fit, but wanted to check initial progress.
So off to the range I went.

It is still going back to the Factory, as I should not have to shim it to make it shoot. They should make it a tighter fit.

Hylander,I hope I'm wrong,but I don't think C/S is gonna help ya...they say that 2" groups @ 100yds. is "acceptable"   :shock:

I actually hope that what you did already FIXES it and it shoots GREAT for ya   :grin:

If you didn't polish the bore before shooting, it could take upwards of 200 rounds or more to get great accuracy. A full pull to the rear on the trigger is mandatory due to the transfer bar, inconsistent ignition will result if you don't. Hang in there, it'll come around. Mine was shooting moa or better with WWB 45gr JHP after about 60 rounds after flitzing the bore, won't hurt and saves range time. :wink:

Yep: Polished the bore, Polished the Chamber.
Gave it a thorough going over.
Also good follow through on the trigger pull.
Not giving up yet, Just frustraded :excuseme: .

Well I think I found the Problem:
The forearm floating and bushing had no affect at all.
There is alot of side  to side Movement between the Receiver and the Barrel. I placed a plastic shim between them and got MOA groups.
Without it groups were 1.5" - 3".
So I am calling the Factory tomorrow and sending it back.
I hope they Fix it.

you stated you shot 100 rounds that day.if this is the case you must ask yourself these questions.

when did the good groups come?with a cold barrel or hot?

how many shots did i fire before accuracy went out the window?

it sure sounds like you have a good shooter there and im sure the factory will do nothing for you with the accuracy you stated above.

Accuracy never came in the window, was bad from the start, 1.5 - 3"

Not even Close, it would shoot one good group of three .75" or better, then open up to 1.5" - 3" and change POI, and no it isn't a bad scope or mounts.
I measured the barrel to frame gap tonight, the fromt by the hinge pin
has .014 play, back by the locking lug has .030 play
I made some steel shims tonight and before I send it back I'm going to try it with the new shims to confirm my finding's.

Hylander-You mentioned side to side play between the barrel and recevier, was this once you breaked open the chamber after pushing the release button?
Your frusteration sounds like what mine was. My 223 is a 1-12 twist, and I had a devil of a time getting consistant groups. Sure it would place a nice group here and there-very nice, but it would open up trying to get them consistantly.  I have shot over 500 rounds thought my 223 so far. I am happy to say that now my groups, with a wide varity of ammo, are a lot tighter compared to my first outings. Not saying that yours will take that much, just that I know how frusterating it can be. There is much to say about barrel break in. Some do excellent without going through all the trouble of shooting with a good polish. I polish my bores as well. But I like to shoot too, more than I like to scrub my guns, so I say pick up some cheap UMC's, or the like, and fire away.

Well I guess srewed up
I sent it back on the 22nd., USPS tried to deliver it yesturday the 24th.
They left a note that they can retry to deliver or they can pick it up,
If it is not claimed they will send it back.
So seeing how they will be closed for the next two weeks, looks like I will be getting it returned and will have to pay to have it reshipped all over again :x
We I talked to them they said nothing of being closed for two weeks :x
